How much does a Uganda gorilla permit cost in 2026?
A Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. The gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga costs USD 1,500 and buys four hours with a family still being habituated. Permits include park entry, ranger guiding and armed escort; they exclude porters (USD 20, always worth it) and gratuities.
For comparison, Rwanda charges USD 1,500 per permit. Two Uganda treks plus a week’s luxury lodging frequently cost less than a single Rwandan trekking package which is the single biggest reason discerning travelers now choose Uganda.

When should you travel to Uganda?
The best time to visit Uganda is June to September and December to February, the two dry seasons, when trekking trails are firmest and savannah game concentrates around water. That said, Uganda sits on the equator and never truly closes. Gorillas are tracked 365 days a year, and the green season rewards anyone who packs decent boots.
Our honest advice: if you have flexibility, travel in early June or late September. You get dry-season conditions without peak-season permit scarcity, and lodges are noticeably quieter.

Uganda visa information
Most nationalities require a visa, applied for online at the official Uganda e-immigration portal before travel. A single-entry tourist visa costs USD 50 and is usually issued within two to four working days. If you are combining Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda, the East Africa Tourist Visa at USD 100 covers all three for 90 days. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond arrival, with two blank pages. We prepare and review every application with you at no charge.
Health requirements
Health requirements can change, so we recommend consulting a qualified travel-health professional before your trip and checking the latest Uganda entry, vaccination, and health requirements before departure. Travelers should also discuss malaria prevention and any recommended vaccinations or medications based on their individual circumstances and itinerary. For gorilla trekking, follow the current health and visitor guidelines provided by the relevant park authorities to help protect both travelers and the gorillas.

That reversal, from roughly 620 individuals in 1989 to over 1,060 today, was paid for largely by trekking permits and gorilla conservation. Travelling solo, as a couple or as a small group
Uganda is exceptionally comfortable for solo travelers. Your guide becomes your companion, briefing you at breakfast and pointing out the difference between a black-and-white casqued hornbill and a grey-cheeked mangabey before you have finished your coffee. We waive single supplements at selected lodges during green season and can pair solo guests with a shared vehicle where budget matters.
Couples and family safaris of four to six get the best economics. The cost of a private vehicle, guide and fuel is fixed, so a party of six can lower the per-person land price by up to thirty percent against a couple traveling alone. Money, tipping and connectivity
The Ugandan shilling is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted for tourism services bring notes printed after 2013 in good condition. ATMs in Kampala, Entebbe, Fort Portal and Kabale dispense shillings reliably; cards are accepted at every luxury lodge but rarely in rural markets. Because our itineraries are fully inclusive, most guests carry cash only for gratuities, curios and porters.
Tipping is discretionary and always appreciated. As a guide: USD 20 per person per day for your private driver-guide, USD 20 per porter on trekking day, USD 15 per person for the ranger team, and a communal lodge tip box of USD 10 to 15 per person per night. Mobile connectivity is surprisingly strong 4G reaches most park gates, and lodges offer Wi-Fi, though the finest ones in Bwindi and Kidepo deliberately keep it in the lounge rather than the rooms.
What a typical safari day actually feels like
On a savannah morning you are woken at 5.30 with coffee at your door, and in the vehicle by six with the roof already open. The plains at Kasenyi are cold enough for a blanket. Lions are usually found within the first hour, followed by kob, warthog, elephant and, if the morning is kind, a leopard descending from an acacia. You are back for a late breakfast by ten, and the middle of the day belongs to your plunge pool, the spa or a nap.
On a trekking morning the rhythm is different. A briefing at eight in the mist, tea served in enamel mugs, allocation to a family, then a walk that may last one hour or six. Nothing prepares you for the first sighting. The forest darkens, your tracker points with a machete handle, and a two-hundred-kilogram silverback looks straight past you at the leaves he intends to eat. Guests almost always cry. Then you walk out, eat a picnic on a ridge above the Congo border, and spend the afternoon quietly rearranging your sense of scale.
Photography, video and preserving the memory
Bwindi is dark. A fast lens between 24mm and 70mm, ISO capability to 6400, and a rain cover matter more than reach. Flash is strictly prohibited. On the savannah, a 100–400mm handles almost everything for wildlife photography, and our vehicles carry bean bags on every window. We brief guides on your kit before departure so the vehicle is positioned for light, not just for view.
For guests who want the journey filmed, we work with Kampala-based cinematographers who can join specific days, and we arrange drone permits where the Uganda Wildlife Authority allows them.
