Location
_______
At the gateway to Volcanoes National Park
Bisate Lodge sits at the foot of Rwanda's Virunga volcanoes, adjacent to Volcanoes National Park. Wilderness describes the lodge as being within walking distance of the park and surrounded by a volcanic landscape overlooking mountains including Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno.
The lodge lies near Musanze and Kinigi, making it particularly convenient for travellers planning gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Most international visitors arrive through Kigali International Airport before continuing by road to the Volcanoes region. Wilderness currently estimates the journey from Kigali International Airport to Bisate at approximately three hours by road, with helicopter transfers also available.
This location gives Bisate an important advantage for a short Rwanda gorilla safari. Rather than spending your time travelling between distant destinations, you can settle into the mountain environment and focus on the experience.
- Close to Volcanoes National Park
- Exceptional base for Rwanda gorilla trekking
- Views towards the Virunga volcanic landscape
- Easy to combine with Kigali and Akagera National Park
Accommodation
_______
Six Forest Villas designed for complete immersion
Bisate Lodge features six forest villas designed to create an intimate experience in the Rwandan highlands.
The architecture draws inspiration from traditional Rwandan royal homes, while natural materials connect the villas with their rainforest surroundings. Inside, guests find spacious interiors, fireplaces, king-size beds and private en-suite bathrooms.
The villas also provide views towards the surrounding volcanic landscape. Depending on the position of your villa and weather conditions, the Virunga mountains create a spectacular backdrop throughout the day.
After a demanding gorilla trek, this setting offers a peaceful place to rest. You can warm up beside the fireplace, enjoy a meal, relax with a treatment or simply watch the mist move across the mountains.
Because the lodge accommodates only a small number of guests, the experience remains intimate rather than resembling a large conventional hotel.
Design & Atmosphere
_______
Architecture inspired by Rwanda's royal heritage.
Bisate's design is one of the reasons the lodge feels so different from conventional luxury hotels. Its circular forest villas draw inspiration from traditional Rwandan royal architecture and are carefully positioned within the landscape.
Curved ceilings, woven materials, natural stone, timber and locally inspired patterns create interiors that feel warm, tactile and distinctly African without becoming overly traditional.
The communal spaces continue the same philosophy, with elegant dining areas, a wine cellar, library and wellness facilities creating places to slow down between adventures.

Experiences
_______
Come for the gorillas. Stay for the whole experience.
Bisate Lodge is particularly well suited to travellers building a luxury Rwanda gorilla safari. Its location provides access to Volcanoes National Park while the lodge itself offers a slower, restorative rhythm before and after trekking.
Venture into Volcanoes National Park with expert guides in search of one of the habituated mountain-gorilla groups.
Discover Rwanda's endemic golden monkeys in the bamboo forests of the Virungas. It is an excellent addition to a gorilla safari.
Explore the rich montane environment around Bisate while looking for colourful forest birds and smaller wildlife.
Give tired muscles time to recover after trekking with a restorative wellness treatment in the lodge's Sanctuary.
Conservation
_______
Luxury with a purpose beyond the lodge.
Conservation forms a central part of the Bisate experience.
The lodge operates within a landscape where former agricultural land has undergone reforestation. Wilderness reports that more than 100,000 indigenous trees have been planted as part of efforts to restore habitat and strengthen the surrounding ecosystem.
Guests can participate directly by planting trees and learning about the restoration programme.
This creates an important connection between luxury tourism and conservation. Rather than simply visiting the Virunga landscape, guests can see how tourism contributes to habitat restoration and community-linked conservation efforts.
RDB also identifies conservation and visitor experience as important elements of tourism development around Volcanoes National Park.
For travellers interested in responsible tourism, this conservation component adds considerable depth to a stay at Bisate.

Dining & Wellness
_______
Refined comfort after a day in the mountains.
Dining forms an important part of the Bisate experience.
The lodge's food philosophy emphasises seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Wilderness states that produce comes largely from the lodge's own vegetable garden, while other ingredients come from neighbouring communities.
This approach allows meals to reflect the destination while supporting a more local food system.
After a morning in the forest, guests can return to a carefully prepared meal before spending the afternoon relaxing or exploring the property.
The dining experience therefore complements the lodge's wider philosophy: luxury that remains connected to Rwanda's landscape and communities.
Lodge Fees
_______
Bisate Lodge Rates
Bisate Lodge operates at the luxury end of Rwanda's safari accommodation market.
Wilderness currently publishes fully inclusive rates for 2026 and 2027. These rates cover accommodation, meals, local drinks, laundry, applicable tourism tax and lodge-based activities. Gorilla trekking permits, park fees and conservation-related charges remain separate.
For example, Wilderness currently lists 2026 rates ranging from USD 2,869 to USD 3,795 per person per night, depending on the travel period. Rates can change, so travellers should confirm the applicable price for their dates before booking.
Rwanda's gorilla trekking permit also carries a separate cost. RDB manages the official gorilla trekking system, and current official guidance should always take precedence when planning a trek.
For an accurate safari quotation, accommodation, permits, transport and other itinerary costs should therefore be calculated together.
