A different side of Uganda

_______

Where the safari feels wild, spacious and genuinely remote.

A Kidepo Valley National Park safari is more than a game-drive holiday. It is a journey into north-eastern Uganda, where expansive savannah, rugged mountains, seasonal valleys and distinctive cultural landscapes create one of the country's most memorable safari settings.

Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Uganda's protected areas managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority. The wider Kidepo landscape is described by Uganda's Ministry of Tourism as a critical ecological zone spanning more than 1,442 square kilometres and incorporating the national park, Karenga Community Wildlife Area and surrounding forest reserves.

That scale matters. Kidepo does not feel like a small wildlife enclosure. The sense of distance, open country and changing light is a central part of its appeal. For travellers who have already explored Uganda's better-known safari routes, Kidepo adds a dramatically different chapter.

Location

Northern Uganda

Park area

1442 km²

Wildlife

Lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras and more

Culture

Karamoja and Northern Uganda cultural heritage

Why Kidepo

_______

Why choose a Kidepo Valley National Park safari?

Kidepo rewards travellers who value space, authenticity and variety. It does not need to imitate the Serengeti, Maasai Mara or any other safari destination. Its strength is its own identity.

Wildlife

_______

What wildlife can you see in Kidepo?

Kidepo is a destination for travellers who want a genuine savannah wildlife experience. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the variety of habitats and the scale of the park create excellent opportunities for memorable encounters.

Game drives work best when they are flexible. Your guide can consider recent sightings, tracks, water availability, habitat, temperature and light rather than following a rigid timetable. That is one of the strongest advantages of a private Kidepo safari.

Lions

One of Kidepo's headline predators. Patient observation can reveal prides resting, moving or interacting.

Elephants

Large herbivores contribute some of the most powerful wildlife scenes in the park's open country.

Giraffes

Giraffes can create spectacular silhouettes against the mountains and golden savannah.

Buffaloes

Large herds can make dramatic scenes, especially where grazing is productive.

Wildlife diversity

Kidepo is more than a Big Five checklist.

The best Kidepo safari is built around the ecosystem: predators, herbivores, birds, landscapes, seasonal water and people all form part of the story.

The wildlife heartland

_______

Narus Valley: a key area for game viewing.

Narus Valley is one of the areas that should feature prominently in a Kidepo safari plan. Seasonal water can become particularly important in drier conditions, influencing where wildlife concentrates.

For that reason, we recommend allowing enough time for more than one game drive. Early mornings bring cooler temperatures and beautiful light, while late afternoons often produce the warmest photographic conditions.

A private itinerary should remain adaptable. Wildlife moves, weather changes and recent sightings can all affect the best route on a particular day.

Beyond the game drive

_______

Things to do on a Kidepo Valley safari

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is available year-round, making Bwindi Impenetrable National Park an exceptional destination in every season. However, the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is generally during the drier months of June to September and December to February, when rainfall is often lower and forest trails may be easier to navigate. These periods are ideal for hiking through Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Because June, July, August, September, December, January and February are popular travel months, gorilla permits, accommodation and Uganda safari packages should be booked well in advance for the best availability.

Private safari packages

_______

Kidepo Valley National Park safari packages

These are planning frameworks, not rigid departures. We customise the itinerary, accommodation, vehicle, activities and transport around your dates and priorities.

Road or Air

Should you drive or fly to Kidepo?

Road safari

Driving takes longer, but the journey becomes part of the adventure. It can introduce northern Uganda, create opportunities for selected stops and connect Kidepo with other destinations.

This is ideal for travellers who enjoy road journeys, photography and seeing Uganda beyond its parks.

Fly-in safari

Flying can maximise time in Kidepo, particularly for luxury travellers with limited holiday days. Schedules and availability should always be confirmed for the exact dates.

A fly-in format can also work well when Kidepo is one chapter of a larger Uganda itinerary.

When to go

_______

Best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park

The best time depends on your priorities. Drier months are generally favourable for classic wildlife viewing because vegetation is more open and animals can become more concentrated around remaining water.

Dry-season safari

Open vegetation, stronger water concentration and easier wildlife tracking can make this the preferred period for first-time wildlife travellers.

Green-season safari

Greener conditions bring fresh landscapes, dramatic skies and excellent opportunities for photographers and birders. Some wildlife may spread out as water becomes more available.

Instead of choosing dates from a generic calendar, we match the season to your interests and the rest of your Uganda route

Getting there

_______

How to get to Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo's remoteness is part of its appeal, but logistics should be planned carefully. The best arrival strategy depends on whether your priority is time, scenery, budget or a complete northern Uganda road journey.

Where to stay

Kidepo Valley National Park accommodation

_______

Accommodation should support the safari rather than compete with it. We select properties according to comfort, location, availability, service, meal plans and the overall style of your journey.

People and place

_______

Experience Karamojong culture responsibly.

Wildlife is only one part of Kidepo. The wider landscape has a distinctive cultural identity that can add depth to the journey when experienced respectfully.

Uganda's Ministry of Tourism identifies cultural heritage as an important component of the wider Kidepo landscape, including Karamojong traditional pastoralist homesteads and Acholi communities.

A responsible cultural experience should be community-led and respectful. Ask before photographing people, listen to explanations, purchase directly from legitimate local producers where possible and avoid treating communities as staged spectacles.

Build a bigger Uganda journey

_______

Combine Kidepo with other safari destinations.

Kidepo can become the remote northern chapter of a longer Uganda journey, particularly when combined with western Uganda's primate and wildlife destinations.

Travel smart

_______

What to pack for a Kidepo safari

Pack practical layers. Days can be warm, early mornings can feel cooler, and dust and sun are part of a savannah safari.

  • Neutral lightweight clothing
  • Warm layer
  • Closed walking shoes
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Binoculars
  • Camera + batteries
  • Refillable bottle
  • Small daypack

For families

We can shorten drives, select comfortable accommodation and build in rest time while keeping wildlife safety at the centre of the itinerary.

For birders

Carry binoculars and tell us in advance if birding is a priority so the guide can adapt the daily schedule.

For photographers

Bring spare batteries and memory cards. A telephoto lens helps with distant wildlife while a wide lens captures Kidepo's enormous landscapes.

Highly recommended We had a wonderful experience with Jonathan. He welcomed us at the airport and took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the end of our trip. The selection of hotels was impeccable, and the route he designed was perfectly planned. Jonathan is extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and went the extra mile to make sure we saw lions and all of the Big Five during our visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. He was always attentive, patient, and eager to make our experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended!

Exceptional experience, enriching and truly unforgettable. From the moment we landed we received a warm welcome. Jonathan was friendly and readily available to answer any queries throughout our trip. He was incredibly accommodating with our requests to visit schools, residences ensuring that we achieved everything we wanted from the trip. We had a great time with Jonathan and driver Isaac. Jonathan was very funny and very knowledgeable he became part of the family and the time just flew whilst we were there, we felt safe at all times. The food at each venue catered for all our needs. Definitely leant a lot on this trip. Just need to be aware that food ordered in restaurants do take a long time as they make it from scratch so if pushed for time might be advisable to pre order. We had unforgettable holiday and this company went above and beyond to make every moment special. I would recommend them to anyone.

.gorilla trek Our KQ flight was horribly delayed. From 2.30 pm to arriving @ almost 3 am the following day. Jonathan kindly arranged for airport pick at this early hour of day and even rescheduled our departure for bwindi so we could get some rest. That was very accommodating.the drive to bwindi was a long drive -11 hrs- n he informed hotel of our late arrival. The lodge he chose for us was good and comfortable. However the vehicle for transporti g us could be better as it was quite hot without air conditioning. Gorilla trek was good but tough. Overall Ababa safaris were very accommodating. I wouldrecommend them. The hotel in Kampala- Speke hotel leaves a lot to be desired

Such a wonderful experience!! My family and I contacted Jonathan to help us plan our first Murchison Falls safari. Jonathan arranged our transport from Kampala, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary and guided game drives through Murchison falls. Ronnie, our professional driver and guide, was very knowledgeable and paid close attention to details to make us comfortable. He met with us a day before takeoff to answer any outstanding questions and recommended a time for us to set off to avoid any traffic. His experience made our trip even more enjoyable because we knew what to expect for entry fees into the park, where to stop to use clean washrooms, eat good food, and also what side of the boat cruise to sit on for the best views! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, job, rhinos, buffaloes and many other animals. We would definitely go with them for our next safari in Uganda! They had great communication, value for money, professionalism, knowledge of the industry and were very reliable.

A must-hire company! Punctual, professional, great communication. We used Ababa Safaris for a trip from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park. I would HIGHLY recommend! Our driver picked us up in a large safari vehicle with a pop up roof. The driver was very punctual and had excellent communication while preparing for the trip and during the trip. Ronnie took us to a nice restaurant for a rest stop that had clean bathrooms and good food. He was friendly with many people we met along the way at the Rhino Sanctuary, on the safari trails, and at our chosen lodging. It felt as though he had good connections with people, which we took as a good sign. Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the best places to see the animals and gave us a great safari experience. As the person in the family who does much of the planning, it was a very enjoyable experience to hand all of that over to Ababa and really get to enjoy myself.

Animals and beautiful nature in Uganda and Rwanda From being picked-up from Entebbe airport in the middle of the night until the drop-off eleven days later in Kigali it was a perfect tour. Jonathan, our guide, and the driver Moses was a perfect team - very friendly, knowledgable and always in time. We visited Entebbe for a tour through the botanical gardens and the zoo, did safaris and boat trips in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP and did trekkings to the chimpazees in Kibale and to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The primates are a must visit when you travel to this region. It's expensive but worth every dollar. The safari parks are of course not as rich in animals as for example the Masai Mara. But they are much cheaper, there are much lesser tourists and nevertheless it doesn't become boring regarding animal sightings. We saw a lot of different antelopes, beautiful giraffes, lions, many elephants, buffalos, a lot of hippos and crocodiles and much more. The choice of hotels was very good, simple and cheap where there was only a short overnight stay and a bit more expensive where it was worth to spend the money for staying close to the places of interest, e.g. close to the starting point for primate trekkings or in the middle of QENP and Murchison NP for not loosing game-drive-time.
