Lake Manyara National Park

Discover a more intimate side of Tanzania on a private Lake Manyara safari, where the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment rises above groundwater forest, open floodplains, acacia woodland and the shimmering alkaline waters of Lake Manyara National Park. This compact but remarkably diverse ecosystem offers a distinctive contrast to the vast plains of the Northern Safari Circuit.

Travel slowly through the park in search of elephants moving beneath the forest canopy, giraffes crossing open woodland and buffalo gathering near seasonal wetlands. With patience and experienced guiding, you may also encounter the park's famous tree-climbing lions, resting high among the branches. Along the lake margins, flamingos and other waterbirds add another dimension to the wildlife experience, particularly for travellers interested in bird watching in Tanzania.

A privately designed Lake Manyara National Park safari can be tailored around wildlife photography, birding, landscapes, culture, relaxation or a combination of experiences. Its location also makes it an excellent addition to a wider Northern Tanzania safari, connecting naturally with Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti.

For discerning travellers, Lake Manyara offers more than a short game-drive stop. It is an opportunity to experience Tanzania's varied landscapes at a more considered pace, with carefully selected accommodation, private guiding and an itinerary designed around your interests.

The Manyara Difference

_______

A small park with an extraordinary sense of place

Lake Manyara National Park rewards travellers who appreciate the finer details of a Tanzania safari. Rather than depending solely on vast concentrations of big game, the park offers a remarkable combination of landscapes, habitats and wildlife experiences within a relatively compact area. Dense groundwater forest rises beneath the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment, while an expansive soda lake, seasonal wetlands, open floodplains and acacia woodland create an ever-changing safari backdrop.

This diversity is one reason a Lake Manyara safari works exceptionally well at the beginning of a Northern Tanzania itinerary. Within a single game drive, the scenery can transform dramatically. You may leave the entrance surrounded by lush forest, continue into open country where giraffe and zebra move through the woodland, then reach lake-edge wetlands where flamingos and other waterbirds gather. Throughout the journey, the towering Rift Valley escarpment provides a striking geological backdrop.

Covering approximately 648.7 square kilometres, Lake Manyara National Park was established in 1960. TANAPA describes the park as a varied ecosystem incorporating groundwater forest, woodland, wetlands, the alkaline lake and distinctive Rift Valley scenery. This ecological variety gives the destination an identity that extends beyond conventional big-game viewing.

Wildlife remains central to the experience. Elephants are particularly associated with the park, while giraffe, zebra, buffalo, hippos, baboons and numerous antelope species can add depth to a Lake Manyara wildlife safari. The park is also known for its birdlife, making it an appealing destination for travellers interested in photography and bird watching.

For luxury travellers, however, the appeal of Lake Manyara is not simply ticking another destination off a Tanzania safari itinerary. It is about creating the right rhythm around the landscape. An early morning game drive can reveal the forest at its coolest and most atmospheric, followed by a relaxed lodge experience, dedicated time for photography or birding, and an unhurried transition towards Ngorongoro, Serengeti or Tarangire.

A thoughtfully designed private Lake Manyara safari therefore becomes more than a stopover. It is an immersive introduction to the landscapes, wildlife and natural contrasts that define Northern Tanzania.

A Different Kind of Safari

_______

Where the forest meets the lake, and lions leave the ground.

Lake Manyara's character comes from its contrasts. The forest feels enclosed and intimate; the lake opens dramatically toward the horizon; the Rift Valley escarpment gives the landscape scale; and the famous tree-climbing lions add an element of unpredictability to every game drive.

Why Include Lake Manyara?

_______

Six reasons discerning travellers choose Manyara

Lake Manyara is often described as a stop on Tanzania's Northern Circuit. We prefer to treat it as an experience in its own right. The right itinerary reveals the park's smaller details while using its position to create an elegant transition between Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

Signature Experiences

_______

Things to do in Lake Manyara National Park

A private Lake Manyara safari should be shaped around the way you want to experience Tanzania. Some travellers want an exceptional wildlife drive. Others prefer photography, birding, forest walks or a slower itinerary built around scenery and intimate camps. The experiences below can be combined according to season, park regulations and your wider safari route.

Private game drives

Game drives are the foundation of a Lake Manyara safari. Private vehicles allow more flexibility with timing, photography stops and wildlife interests than a rigid shared-tour schedule.

Bird watching

With more than 400 bird species recorded according to TANAPA's wildlife information, Manyara is particularly rewarding for travellers who want to combine a classic safari with serious birding.

Landscape photography

Manyara is unusually photogenic because wildlife, forest, lake and escarpment can appear in the same visual composition. Golden morning light can be particularly beautiful around the lake and woodland.

Lake and wetland viewing

Lake-edge habitats bring together flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and other waterbirds. The exact spectacle changes with water levels, weather and season.

Tree-climbing lion search

Your guide can focus on the woodland habitats where tree-climbing lions are known to occur. The encounter is never guaranteed, but searching for them is part of the excitement.

Canopy walkway

The elevated canopy experience provides another perspective on the groundwater forest. TANAPA describes the walkway as approximately 470 metres long, with elevated viewing sections through the forest.

Forest and primate encounters

The groundwater forest supports blue monkeys, baboons and numerous forest birds. It adds an important primate and ecological dimension to a Northern Tanzania wildlife itinerary.

Cultural experiences near Mto wa Mbu

Manyara's location near Mto wa Mbu makes it possible to add cultural experiences outside the park, creating a more rounded itinerary that includes local communities, food, crafts and everyday life.

The Luxury Approach

_______

Luxury is not about rushing between highlights

A premium Lake Manyara safari should feel considered from the moment you leave Arusha. Instead of filling every available hour with activities, we build the itinerary around the things you genuinely want to see and photograph.

That might mean entering the park early, when temperatures are cooler and wildlife activity can be rewarding. It might mean slowing down around a troop of baboons, spending longer with elephants in the forest, or waiting patiently for a tree-climbing lion to shift position.

It can also mean choosing accommodation according to the entire journey, rather than selecting the cheapest available room close to the gate. The best luxury safari design considers location, atmosphere, service, food, privacy, guiding and the transitions between destinations.

From Lake Manyara, the journey can flow naturally toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park or Tarangire National Park. The result is a Tanzania safari that feels like one continuous story, rather than a collection of disconnected hotel nights.

Safari Planning

_______

How many days do you need in Lake Manyara?

For many travellers, Lake Manyara works beautifully as a one-night or one-day component within a longer Northern Tanzania safari. Its compact geography means a well-planned game drive can reveal a remarkable amount of habitat in a relatively short period.

However, the right duration depends on your interests. A traveller primarily interested in seeing the classic wildlife may be satisfied with a focused game drive. A bird photographer, landscape photographer or traveller who values slow safari experiences may prefer more time.

If Manyara is being combined with Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we usually recommend designing the sequence so that each park contributes something different. Manyara brings forest, lake, birds and tree-climbing lions; Ngorongoro adds crater landscapes and dense wildlife; Serengeti provides expansive plains and one of Africa's great large-scale wildlife ecosystems.

One day

A focused Lake Manyara game drive for travellers continuing toward Ngorongoro or another Northern Circuit destination.

One night

More relaxed arrival and departure, with space for an extended game-viewing experience.

Two nights

Ideal when the itinerary places greater emphasis on birding, photography, forest experiences and a slower pace.

Northern Tanzania

Build Lake Manyara into a greater Tanzania safari

The strongest Lake Manyara itineraries rarely end at the park boundary. Its geographical position makes it an elegant component of a private Northern Tanzania safari.

01

Arusha → Tarangire

Meet your safari team, settle into your chosen accommodation and review the journey before the following day's departure.

02

Tarangire → Lake Manyara

Continue toward the Rift Valley and enter a dramatically different environment of groundwater forest, lake and escarpment.

03

Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro

After a final morning experience, ascend toward the Ngorongoro highlands for a completely different landscape and wildlife setting.

04

Ngorongoro → Serengeti

Continue west into the Serengeti for open plains, predator viewing, photography and the possibility of following seasonal wildlife movements.

05

Serengeti → Zanzibar

Finish with a private island extension, transforming a wildlife journey into a complete Tanzania safari and beach holiday.

Getting There

_______

How to get to Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is one of the more accessible parks on Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit. TANAPA's visitor information places the park approximately 125 kilometres from Arusha, with the main gate close to Mto wa Mbu at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

For private safaris, road transfers are often the most seamless choice because they allow the journey itself to become part of the itinerary. Your guide can make selected stops and coordinate arrival times with your lodge and park entry.

Fly-in options can also be incorporated for travellers prioritising time. Manyara Airstrip provides access for scheduled or charter services, subject to current airline schedules and operating conditions.

From Arusha

Approximately 125 km by road according to TANAPA's current visitor information.

Via Mto wa Mbu

The town provides a useful gateway for park access and cultural experiences.

By air

Manyara Airstrip can be used for suitable scheduled or charter arrangements.

Best approach

Choose road or air according to the rhythm, budget and geography of your wider Tanzania safari.

Where To Stay

_______

Luxury accommodation around Lake Manyara

Accommodation should be selected as part of the safari design rather than treated as an afterthought. Around Lake Manyara and nearby Karatu, travellers can choose from intimate luxury lodges, boutique properties and camps with very different personalities.

Birding

_______

A rewarding destination for bird lovers

Planning a Lake Manyara birding safari? Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most rewarding destinations for bird watching, combining an alkaline lake, wetlands, groundwater forest, acacia woodland and open grassland within a compact Northern Tanzania safari destination. With more than 400 recorded bird species, the park offers excellent opportunities to encounter waterbirds, forest species and woodland birds alongside its famous wildlife.

A Lake Manyara safari is particularly appealing to travellers who want more than traditional big-game viewing. Flamingos can create spectacular scenes around the lake, while pelicans, storks, herons, fish eagles, bee-eaters, hornbills and many other species add variety throughout the year. The changing habitats make each game drive an opportunity to discover different birdlife and wildlife.

For serious birders, we can tailor a private Tanzania birding safari around habitat transitions, photography opportunities and a slower pace of exploration. Experienced local guiding is especially valuable when searching for smaller or less conspicuous species that are easily missed during a conventional game drive.

Whether you are planning a dedicated Lake Manyara bird watching safari or combining Manyara with Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, this remarkable park offers an immersive introduction to birding in Tanzania.

Photography

_______

Designed for photographers who want more than a checklist

Lake Manyara creates unusually layered compositions. A lion in an acacia tree can be framed against open sky. Elephants can emerge through green forest. Flamingos can turn the lake edge pink. The Rift Valley escarpment can transform an ordinary wildlife scene into a powerful landscape image.

Responsible Safari

_______

Travel gently through a fragile Rift Valley ecosystem

The beauty of Lake Manyara depends on the health of its wetlands, forests and wildlife habitats. Responsible safari behaviour therefore matters.

Travellers should remain on designated roads and boardwalks, never feed wildlife, keep noise low around bird roosts and follow guide and ranger instructions. Particular care is important around elephants, hippos and other large animals.

A luxury safari should never mean greater intrusion. The most sophisticated approach is often the quietest one: keep a respectful distance, allow animals to behave naturally and leave the landscape as you found it.

Highly recommended We had a wonderful experience with Jonathan. He welcomed us at the airport and took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the end of our trip. The selection of hotels was impeccable, and the route he designed was perfectly planned. Jonathan is extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and went the extra mile to make sure we saw lions and all of the Big Five during our visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. He was always attentive, patient, and eager to make our experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended!

Exceptional experience, enriching and truly unforgettable. From the moment we landed we received a warm welcome. Jonathan was friendly and readily available to answer any queries throughout our trip. He was incredibly accommodating with our requests to visit schools, residences ensuring that we achieved everything we wanted from the trip. We had a great time with Jonathan and driver Isaac. Jonathan was very funny and very knowledgeable he became part of the family and the time just flew whilst we were there, we felt safe at all times. The food at each venue catered for all our needs. Definitely leant a lot on this trip. Just need to be aware that food ordered in restaurants do take a long time as they make it from scratch so if pushed for time might be advisable to pre order. We had unforgettable holiday and this company went above and beyond to make every moment special. I would recommend them to anyone.

.gorilla trek Our KQ flight was horribly delayed. From 2.30 pm to arriving @ almost 3 am the following day. Jonathan kindly arranged for airport pick at this early hour of day and even rescheduled our departure for bwindi so we could get some rest. That was very accommodating.the drive to bwindi was a long drive -11 hrs- n he informed hotel of our late arrival. The lodge he chose for us was good and comfortable. However the vehicle for transporti g us could be better as it was quite hot without air conditioning. Gorilla trek was good but tough. Overall Ababa safaris were very accommodating. I wouldrecommend them. The hotel in Kampala- Speke hotel leaves a lot to be desired

Such a wonderful experience!! My family and I contacted Jonathan to help us plan our first Murchison Falls safari. Jonathan arranged our transport from Kampala, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary and guided game drives through Murchison falls. Ronnie, our professional driver and guide, was very knowledgeable and paid close attention to details to make us comfortable. He met with us a day before takeoff to answer any outstanding questions and recommended a time for us to set off to avoid any traffic. His experience made our trip even more enjoyable because we knew what to expect for entry fees into the park, where to stop to use clean washrooms, eat good food, and also what side of the boat cruise to sit on for the best views! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, job, rhinos, buffaloes and many other animals. We would definitely go with them for our next safari in Uganda! They had great communication, value for money, professionalism, knowledge of the industry and were very reliable.

A must-hire company! Punctual, professional, great communication. We used Ababa Safaris for a trip from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park. I would HIGHLY recommend! Our driver picked us up in a large safari vehicle with a pop up roof. The driver was very punctual and had excellent communication while preparing for the trip and during the trip. Ronnie took us to a nice restaurant for a rest stop that had clean bathrooms and good food. He was friendly with many people we met along the way at the Rhino Sanctuary, on the safari trails, and at our chosen lodging. It felt as though he had good connections with people, which we took as a good sign. Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the best places to see the animals and gave us a great safari experience. As the person in the family who does much of the planning, it was a very enjoyable experience to hand all of that over to Ababa and really get to enjoy myself.

Animals and beautiful nature in Uganda and Rwanda From being picked-up from Entebbe airport in the middle of the night until the drop-off eleven days later in Kigali it was a perfect tour. Jonathan, our guide, and the driver Moses was a perfect team - very friendly, knowledgable and always in time. We visited Entebbe for a tour through the botanical gardens and the zoo, did safaris and boat trips in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP and did trekkings to the chimpazees in Kibale and to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The primates are a must visit when you travel to this region. It's expensive but worth every dollar. The safari parks are of course not as rich in animals as for example the Masai Mara. But they are much cheaper, there are much lesser tourists and nevertheless it doesn't become boring regarding animal sightings. We saw a lot of different antelopes, beautiful giraffes, lions, many elephants, buffalos, a lot of hippos and crocodiles and much more. The choice of hotels was very good, simple and cheap where there was only a short overnight stay and a bit more expensive where it was worth to spend the money for staying close to the places of interest, e.g. close to the starting point for primate trekkings or in the middle of QENP and Murchison NP for not loosing game-drive-time.
