Discover Mgahinga: Uganda's Forest of Golden Monkeys and Mountain Gorillas
Tucked into the far south-west corner of Uganda, Mgahinga National Park is the country's smallest national park at just 33.7 km² — yet it delivers experiences found nowhere else. Nestled at the foot of the dramatic Virunga volcanoes, the park protects the Ugandan slopes of three extinct giants: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo, whose summits rise into the clouds along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.
Mgahinga is most famous as the Ugandan home of the golden monkey — a striking orange-furred primate found only in the Virunga massif — and of the Nyakagezi mountain gorilla family, which roams its bamboo and Hagenia forest. Its rare combination of bamboo forest, volcanic moorland and dramatic peaks makes it a truly atmospheric destination, and the park's Batwa Cultural Trail offers one of the most authentic cultural encounters in East Africa.
Whether you are coming for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, volcano hiking or simply the beauty of this wild, uncrowded corner of the Pearl of Africa, this comprehensive guide covers everything you need to plan the perfect Mgahinga safari — from permits and entrance fees to accommodation, the best time to visit and how to combine Mgahinga with Bwindi and Rwanda.

WHY VISIT
_______
Why Visit Mgahinga National Park?
Mgahinga is best suited to travelers who want primates, mountain scenery, hiking and cultural experiences rather than a conventional savanna game-drive safari.
Golden Monkey Tracking
Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda to see the beautiful golden monkey, found nowhere else but the Virunga volcanoes. Watching these orange-furred primates leap through bamboo is unforgettable.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
The Nyakagezi gorilla family calls Mgahinga home, offering an intimate, exclusive gorilla experience with fewer daily permits than Bwindi and a raw, remote setting.
Three Virunga Volcanoes
Mount Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo rise across the park. From Sabyinyo's summit ridge you can stand in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo at the same time.
The Batwa Cultural Trail
Led by the forest's original inhabitants, this authentic cultural walk showcases Batwa hunting, medicine, shelter and their spiritual bond with the forest.
Stunning Bamboo Forest
The park's swathes of giant bamboo, Hagenia woodland and volcanic moorland create one of Africa's most striking and unusual landscapes.
Intimate & Uncrowded
At just 33.7 km² and with few daily visitors, Mgahinga delivers a deeply private experience — you might have the forest almost to yourself.
Albertine Rift Birds
Around 100 bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics like the Rwenzori turaco and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird, reward keen birders.
Perfect Apes & Volcanoes Combo
Pair Mgahinga with Bwindi gorillas and a Rwandan gorilla trek for the ultimate great apes and Virunga volcanoes circuit.
location
_______
Where Is Mgahinga National Park?
Mgahinga National Park lies in Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda, close to the Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo borders. Ntebeko is the main park headquarters and Kisoro is the nearest major town.
_______
Mgahinga National Park is located in the far south-western corner of Uganda, in Kisoro District, right on the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It lies at the northern end of the Virunga volcano chain, a series of eight extinct volcanoes that straddle the Uganda-Rwanda-DRC border.
The park is around 15 km from Kisoro town, the nearest major settlement, and about 70 km from Kabale. The park headquarters at Ntebeko forms the main gateway, with the park's three volcanoes — Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo — dominating the skyline. Because of its location, Mgahinga is exceptionally well placed for cross-border great apes safaris, and flights via Kigali in Rwanda make it surprisingly accessible.

Mgahinga National Park sits at the northern end of the Virunga volcano chain on the Uganda-Rwanda-DRC border, about 15 km from Kisoro town in south-western Uganda.
Typical travel times: Kigali ~4-5 hours • Kampala ~8-9 hours • Bwindi ~3-4 hours • Kabale ~2 hours
The Virunga Volcanoes
_______
The Three Volcanoes of Mgahinga
Mgahinga protects the Ugandan slopes of three extinct Virunga volcanoes — each offering its own unique climb and views.
Mount Muhabura
4,127 m
A demanding full-day climb. The route reaches high altitude and rewards prepared hikers with broad views when weather permits.
Mount Gahinga
3,474 m
The lowest of the three peaks. The hike passes through forest and highland vegetation before reaching the summit area.
Mount Sabyinyo
3,645 m
A challenging ridge hike with steep sections. The summit area is associated with the Uganda-Rwanda-DRC border junction.
Stand in Three Countries at Once
The summit ridge of Mount Sabyinyo is one of the most remarkable viewpoints in Africa, sitting precisely at the junction of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. On a clear day, climbers can stand with one foot in each country while looking across the whole Virunga chain. All volcano hikes require a qualified UWA ranger guide and are best undertaken with reasonable fitness.
Hiking safety: Mountain weather changes quickly. Follow ranger instructions, use the authorized route and do not treat the three-country viewpoint as permission to cross an international border.
the main event
_______
Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga
Track the Nyakagezi mountain gorilla family through bamboo and Hagenia forest on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes — an intimate, exclusive encounter.
Gorilla trekking takes visitors into the mountain forests of the Virunga landscape to observe habituated mountain gorillas under ranger supervision.
The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
Mgahinga National Park is home to the Nyakagezi mountain gorilla family, one of only two places in Uganda to track mountain gorillas. Unlike the larger, more visited Bwindi forest, Mgahinga offers a more intimate and exclusive experience, with fewer daily permits and typically smaller trekking groups.
The Nyakagezi group is known to be quite mobile, sometimes ranging across the Uganda-Rwanda border, so treks can be longer and more adventurous. Expert ranger trackers, armed with knowledge of the family's locations, are highly skilled at finding them. When you do meet the family, you'll spend one unforgettable hour observing the silverback, mothers and young in their natural volcanic forest home.

What to Expect
- Report at the designated park meeting point at the required time.
- Receive a ranger briefing before entering the forest.
- Follow the ranger and tracker team along the authorized route.
- Keep the required distance and follow all wildlife rules.
- Observation time is limited by UWA rules and can be affected by the gorillas' movements.
Important: Gorilla groups can range through the wider Virunga landscape. Confirm the current trekking group arrangement and permit availability before finalizing your itinerary.
Permit Information
Gorilla permit: USD 800 per person (Foreign Non-Resident) • minimum age 15 years • maximum one hour with the gorillas. Sightings are never guaranteed, as is standard for all gorilla trekking, and permits should be booked well in advance through UWA or a registered operator.
Mgahinga's Signature Species
_______
Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga
The only place in Uganda to see the beautiful golden monkey — a primate found nowhere else but the Virunga volcanoes.
Golden monkey permit : USD 100 per person • duration typically 2-3 hours • morning treks recommended when the troops are most active. No wildlife sighting can ever be guaranteed, but habituated troops are reliably tracked.

Why golden monkeys are special
-
Golden monkeys have bright golden-orange fur and live in troops in the bamboo and montane forest habitats of the Virunga Mountains. Their restricted range makes them one of Mgahinga's signature species.
Tracking is generally less demanding than gorilla trekking, but visitors should still expect forest trails, uneven ground and changing weather.
Tracking vs habituation
-
Golden monkey tracking is the standard visitor experience. Golden Monkey Habituation Experience provides a longer research-oriented encounter and has a separate permit.
UWA's latest located tariff lists tracking at USD 60 FNR, USD 50 FR and UGX 40,000 EAC; habituation at USD 100 FNR, USD 80 FR and UGX 100,000 EAC. Confirm current rates before booking.

Home to about 40 mammal species and around 100 bird species, Mgahinga is a compact but remarkably diverse volcanic wilderness.
Mountain Gorilla
Occasional
The Nyakagezi family treks through the upper forest and bamboo zone, tracked daily by rangers. An unparalleled wilderness encounter.

Mgahinga's signature species. Energetic troops of orange-furred monkeys leap through the bamboo, and are reliably encountered on tracking walks.
Black-and-White Colobus
Commonly seen
Striking monkeys with flowing white tails, frequently seen crossing the forest canopy in groups.
Silver Monkey
Commonly seen
A grey-brown guenon that forages along the forest edges and bamboo fringes, often alongside the golden monkey troops.

Small herds graze in the park's clearings and forest fringes, occasionally encountered on trails.
Giant Forest Hog

Bushbuck
Occasional
A handsome, shy antelope with spiral horns, often glimpsed in dense cover near dawn and dusk.
Duiker
Commonly seen
Small, secretive forest antelope frequently heard bolting through the undergrowth as you walk.
Leopard
Rare
Present but extremely elusive, a leopard is the prize sighting for those who devote days to the forest.
African Golden Cat
Rare
A rare, beautiful forest cat that is among the most difficult mammals in Africa to see.
Spotted Hyena
Rare
Occasional in the lower, more open areas of the park and its fringes, mostly at night.
Bird Watching in Mgahinga
UWA lists more than 180 bird species for the park, including Albertine Rift species. Birding is especially suited to travelers who enjoy montane forest, bamboo and highland habitats.
Rwenzori Turaco
A spectacular green-and-red turaco with a striking crest, a top target for birders in the forest.
Regal Sunbird
A striking, richly-coloured sunbird more typical of the Rwenzori and Virunga highlands.
Kivu Ground Thrush
A secretive ground-dwelling thrush of the montane forest floor.
White-naped Raven
A large, powerful raven of the high-altitude zone, often seen in pairs or small flocks.
Handsome Francolin
A distinctive, beautifully patterned ground bird of the high-altitude forest and moorland.
Dusky Crimsonwing
A colourful finch-like bird of the undergrowth and forest fringes.
Cinnamon Bracken Warbler
A skulking warbler often heard before it is seen in the dense bracken.
Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird
A dazzling little sunbird with brilliant red ear tufts, found in the moorland zone.
Strange Weaver
A dark, subtly-marked weaver that favours the bamboo and alpine zones.
Montane Oriole
A handsome black-and-yellow oriole of the upper forest canopy.
A Realistic Wildlife Note
Mgahinga is a forest park, so much of its wildlife is shy and well hidden. The golden monkeys and habituated gorilla family are the reliable highlights; buffalo, bushbuck and colobus monkeys are sometimes seen; and larger predators like the leopard and golden cat are present but almost never observed. For a wildlife-focused or big-game safari, the savanna parks of Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls are a better fit — but for primates and dramatic volcanic scenery, Mgahinga is unmissable.
Wildlife expectation: Mgahinga is not a classic Big Five game-drive destination. If lions, large herds and open savanna are your priority, consider Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. If primates, gorillas, birds and mountain landscapes are your priority, Mgahinga is a stronger fit.

Weather & Altitude
Because Mgahinga sits high on the Virunga slopes, its climate is cooler than Uganda's lower-lying parks. Daytime temperatures are mild, but mornings and evenings are notably cool, and the volcanic summits can be cold even in the dry season. Rain is possible at any time of year, so bring warm layers and waterproofs. For precise condition details at the time of travel, check with your guide — and plan hikes for the first clear window to maximise views.

Compare current permit prices, border requirements, accommodation and trekking availability before choosing.
Conservation & Respect
_______
Conservation & Responsible Tourism in Mgahinga
Mgahinga is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and benefits directly from gorilla and golden monkey tourism. Your visit supports conservation and the surrounding Batwa and Bakiga communities.
Follow Ranger Instructions
Always stay with your guide and follow safety and route instructions on every trek and climb.
Stay on Designated Trails
Keep to marked paths to protect fragile volcanic soil and the forest undergrowth
Do Not Feed Wildlife
Feeding gorillas, golden monkeys or other animals risks their health and alters natural behaviour.
Keep Noise Low
Quiet observation minimises stress on the primates and greatly improves your sightings.
Respect Birds & Wildlife
Keep a respectful distance and never use flashes or harass animals for a photograph.
Avoid Littering
Take all waste with you and leave the volcanic forest exactly as you found it.
Support Local Communities
Use the Batwa Cultural Trail and local guides, and choose community-run services that fund conservation.
Respect Cultural Traditions
The Batwa and Bakiga have deep ties to this forest — ask before photographing people and be respectful.
The Batwa Cultural Trail is the park's flagship community initiative. Led by the Batwa people — the forest's original inhabitants — the trail shares their traditional knowledge and culture while directly channelling income and recognition back to the community. By taking part, you are helping the Batwa preserve their heritage and share in the benefits of protecting the forest they once called home.
What to Pack

What to Pack for Mgahinga National Park
The volcanic forests and high altitude call for specific packing. Here's your practical checklist.
Waterproof jacket
Mgahinga is at altitude and rain can arrive at any time, even in the dry season.
Warm layers & fleece
The park sits at 2,200-4,100 m; mornings and high slopes get cold, especially for volcano climbs.
Sturdy hiking boots
Steep, often muddy volcanic slopes and bamboo forest demand good ankle support.
Lightweight clothing
Breathable, quick-drying fabrics keep you comfortable during exertion and humid spells.
Garden gloves
Handy for grabbing vegetation on steep or slippery sections and on the gorilla trek.
Insect repellent
Important in the forest and at lower altitudes, and for overnight stops.
Sunscreen & hat
UV is strong at altitude even when cloudy, especially on exposed volcano summits.
Binoculars
Essential for golden monkeys, primates and the park's Albertine Rift birds
