Southern Tanzania • Private Luxury Safaris

_______

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park offers a distinctive interpretation of the Tanzanian safari. The experience is defined by space, water and wild landscapes rather than a single iconic animal.

Formerly part of the legendary Selous landscape, the park protects a vast mosaic of floodplains, riverine habitats, open grasslands and miombo woodland. At its centre is the Rufiji River.

This creates an unusual safari rhythm. One morning can begin with a private game drive. Later, you can move onto the river. Another day may focus on walking and tracking.

The result is a more varied Nyerere National Park safari. It suits travellers who want wildlife, landscapes and genuine wilderness in one journey.

For luxury travellers, the destination becomes even more compelling when paired with a carefully selected camp, private guiding and a flexible itinerary.

Discover a wilder side of Tanzania, shaped by the Rufiji River, expansive wetlands, miombo woodland and extraordinary wildlife. Design a private Nyerere safari around game drives, river journeys, walking experiences and beautifully remote camps.

Why Nyerere

_______

Four Ways to Experience the Wilderness

Nyerere rewards travellers who want more than conventional game drives. Its rivers, floodplains and woodland create several distinct ways to explore.

Wildlife

_______

Nyerere National Park Wildlife

Discover the wild side of southern Tanzania with a Nyerere National Park safari designed around your interests. The park protects a remarkable mix of riverine habitats, wetlands, grasslands and miombo woodland, creating diverse settings for wildlife viewing.

From elephants and buffalo to hippos, crocodiles and impressive birdlife, every outing offers a different perspective. Lions, leopards, hyenas and African wild dogs may also be encountered, depending on season, location and local conditions.

A private Nyerere safari allows you to experience this wilderness at your own pace. Combine exclusive game drives with a Rufiji River boat experience and a carefully selected luxury safari camp. Add photography, walking or relaxation for a more complete journey.

Whether you are planning a romantic escape, family adventure or luxury Tanzania safari, we create an itinerary that fits your time, interests and travel style.

Elephants

Elephants are among the defining animals of Nyerere. Riverine habitats and seasonal water sources create memorable opportunities for observation.

Lions & Leopards

Big cats inhabit the park's woodland and floodplain habitats. Dawn and late afternoon often provide excellent conditions for searching.

African Wild Dogs

Nyerere is an important stronghold for African wild dogs. Their movements can cover large areas, making patient guiding especially valuable.

Hippos & Crocodiles

The Rufiji system supports abundant aquatic wildlife. Boat safaris provide a different perspective on these river specialists.

The Rufiji River

_______

Follow the River Into the Wild

The Rufiji is the visual and ecological centrepiece of Nyerere National Park. Its channels, floodplains, sandbanks and connected wetlands create a completely different safari environment.

A Nyerere boat safari allows you to observe the landscape from the water. Hippos surface nearby. Crocodiles rest along the banks. Birds move through the shallows.

Elephants may approach the water to drink. Riverbanks can become natural viewing points for wildlife activity.

Boat Safaris

Explore channels and wetlands.

Wildlife

Look for hippos, crocodiles and elephants.

Birding

Watch riverine and wetland species.

Experience the river in softer light.

Luxury Safari Design

_______

Luxury Is About How You Experience Nyerere

A luxury safari is not defined only by a beautiful lodge. It is also defined by space, timing, privacy and attention to detail.

Your private Nyerere safari can be shaped around your interests. Wildlife photography may require longer stops. Birding may require a slower pace. A honeymoon journey may prioritise privacy and scenic camps.

We can combine game drives with river experiences and carefully selected accommodation. The result is a more personal Tanzania safari.

  • Private safari vehicle options
  • Experienced local safari guiding
  • Carefully selected luxury camps and lodges
  • Flexible daily safari schedules
  • Wildlife photography-focused itineraries
  • Honeymoon and anniversary planning
  • Southern Tanzania multi-park journeys

Private Game Drives

_______

Explore Beyond the River

Boat safaris are a defining part of Nyerere. Yet the land safari remains equally important.

A private game drive opens the wider landscape. Roads cross grasslands, woodland and floodplain. Each habitat supports a different wildlife community.

Early morning is often rewarding for active wildlife. The cooler conditions can also create comfortable photography opportunities. Later in the day, the light becomes softer.

Your guide can adjust the pace around wildlife behaviour. Instead of rushing between sightings, you can spend more time watching an animal or understanding its surroundings.

This is particularly valuable for photographers. The goal is not simply to collect sightings. It is to create meaningful images with good light, respectful positioning and enough time.

Nyerere also suits travellers who value quieter game viewing. The immense landscape creates a strong sense of distance from busy urban environments.

Walking Safaris

_______

Slow Down and Read the Landscape

Walking changes the safari completely.

Instead of travelling between sightings by vehicle, you become more aware of tracks, insects, plants, birds and smaller signs of wildlife.

Guided walking experiences are conducted under the applicable park rules and with authorised guides or rangers.

This makes walking particularly attractive to experienced safari travellers who want a deeper connection with the landscape.

A well-designed itinerary can balance walking with game drives and river activities. Each experience reveals a different side of Nyerere.

Birding Safari

_______

Nyerere for Birdwatchers

A Nyerere National Park birding safari offers an exceptional way to explore Tanzania’s diverse river, wetland and woodland habitats. The Rufiji River system, lakes, floodplains and open savannas create varied environments where birdlife can thrive.

Birdwatchers can look for African fish eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters, herons, egrets and other wetland and riverine species. The changing landscapes also create opportunities to observe birds across woodland, grassland and seasonal water habitats.

A private Nyerere safari is particularly rewarding for dedicated birders. You can travel at a slower pace, spend longer at promising locations and make additional stops for photography or species identification. Your safari guide can also adjust daily activities around local conditions and seasonal bird activity.

For serious birdwatching, Nyerere National Park can form part of a wider Tanzania birding safari itinerary. Combining the park with other wildlife and birding destinations adds greater habitat variety and more opportunities to expand your species list.

Our safari planners can tailor your Nyerere birding safari around your target species, preferred travel season, photography interests and accommodation style.

Safari Seasons

_______

Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park

There is no single perfect month for every traveller. The best time depends on whether you prioritise wildlife concentration, green landscapes, birding or specific safari experiences. Rather than choosing dates from a generic calendar, we recommend matching the season to your priorities. Tell us whether wildlife, photography, birding, walking or river experiences matter most.

Safari Duration

_______

How Many Days Do You Need in Nyerere?

The ideal Nyerere National Park safari duration depends on your interests, travel pace and wider Tanzania itinerary. A short stay can introduce you to the Rufiji River, wildlife-rich floodplains and diverse safari habitats. However, extra nights allow you to explore at a more relaxed pace.

We generally recommend three to four nights in Nyerere National Park for a well-rounded safari. This gives you time for private game drives, Rufiji River boat safaris and other carefully selected experiences without making the journey feel rushed.

A longer luxury Nyerere safari works particularly well for photographers, birdwatchers, honeymooners and travellers seeking a slower, more immersive experience. Additional nights also create greater flexibility for early-morning and afternoon wildlife activities.

Your safari length should also reflect transfer times and the number of destinations included in your Southern Tanzania safari. Combining Nyerere with Ruaha National Park can create a deeper wilderness journey, while adding Zanzibar can provide a relaxing coastal finish.

For a private itinerary, we can tailor the number of nights around your interests, accommodation preferences and travel schedule.

Example Journey

A Sample Luxury Nyerere Safari

This is a planning example. Your itinerary can be changed around flights, interests, accommodation and safari pace.

Arrive in Southern Tanzania

Fly or transfer into the Nyerere region. Settle into your selected safari camp. Enjoy a relaxed evening surrounded by wilderness.

Private Game Drive

Begin early. Explore open habitats and woodland. Search for elephants, buffalo, predators and plains game with your private guide.

Rufiji River Boat Safari

Spend part of the day exploring the river and its channels. Look for hippos, crocodiles, elephants and riverine birds.

Walking or Extended Wildlife Day

Choose a guided walking experience or another extended game drive. End the journey at camp or continue to your next  destination.

Southern Tanzania

_______

Combine Nyerere with Ruaha

Two destinations can create a remarkably varied Southern Tanzania safari.

Nyerere and Ruaha complement one another. Nyerere is shaped by the Rufiji River, wetlands and woodland. Ruaha is known for its vast dry-country landscapes, baobabs, elephants and predator-rich wilderness.

A combined itinerary can therefore deliver different habitats and safari experiences without forcing you into a conventional northern circuit.

This route can work particularly well for experienced safari travellers, photographers and couples seeking a quieter Tanzania journey.

Access & Logistics

_______

Getting to Nyerere National Park

Nyerere is well suited to fly-in safari planning. Flights can connect the park with Dar es Salaam and other destinations depending on the operating schedule.

Road access is also possible. However, travel times can be significant depending on the route and season.

For a premium itinerary, flying can reduce transfer time. It can also allow you to spend more of your holiday inside the wilderness.

We can coordinate domestic flights, transfers, accommodation, private guiding and park activities as one itinerary.

Photography

_______

A Strong Destination for Wildlife Photography

A Nyerere National Park photography safari offers exceptional opportunities to capture wildlife, landscapes and river scenes in one of Tanzania’s most diverse wilderness areas. Along the Rufiji River, elephants create powerful environmental images against water, palms and open floodplains. Hippos and crocodiles provide striking water-level perspectives, while African wild dogs offer dynamic opportunities for action and behavioural photography.

Landscape photographers can explore reflections, channels, palms, wetlands and expansive floodplains. Early morning and late afternoon light can add depth, texture and atmosphere to every frame.

A private Nyerere safari vehicle gives photographers greater flexibility. You can adjust your position, wait longer at promising sightings and follow changing light without the restrictions of a shared vehicle.

Your itinerary can also be tailored around your photography goals. Focus on wildlife portraits, animal behaviour, birds, environmental scenes or landscapes. With an experienced guide and carefully planned game drives, your luxury Tanzania photography safari becomes more than sightseeing it becomes a focused photographic journey through the wild heart of Nyerere National Park.

Conservation

_______

Protecting a Living Wilderness

Nyerere National Park is part of a much larger conservation story in southern Tanzania. The park forms part of the wider Selous ecosystem, a landscape recognised for its exceptional biodiversity, extensive habitats and important ecological processes.

Conservation in Nyerere National Park focuses on protecting wildlife habitats, maintaining healthy ecosystems and safeguarding species such as elephants, lions, African wild dogs, hippos and crocodiles. Effective conservation also depends on addressing wildlife crime, supporting scientific research and strengthening long-term habitat protection.

Responsible tourism plays an important role in this effort. Well-managed Nyerere National Park safaris can support conservation while creating economic opportunities for local communities and tourism businesses. Visitors can contribute by following park regulations, maintaining safe wildlife distances and choosing responsible safari operators.

Highly recommended We had a wonderful experience with Jonathan. He welcomed us at the airport and took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the end of our trip. The selection of hotels was impeccable, and the route he designed was perfectly planned. Jonathan is extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and went the extra mile to make sure we saw lions and all of the Big Five during our visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. He was always attentive, patient, and eager to make our experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended!

Exceptional experience, enriching and truly unforgettable. From the moment we landed we received a warm welcome. Jonathan was friendly and readily available to answer any queries throughout our trip. He was incredibly accommodating with our requests to visit schools, residences ensuring that we achieved everything we wanted from the trip. We had a great time with Jonathan and driver Isaac. Jonathan was very funny and very knowledgeable he became part of the family and the time just flew whilst we were there, we felt safe at all times. The food at each venue catered for all our needs. Definitely leant a lot on this trip. Just need to be aware that food ordered in restaurants do take a long time as they make it from scratch so if pushed for time might be advisable to pre order. We had unforgettable holiday and this company went above and beyond to make every moment special. I would recommend them to anyone.

.gorilla trek Our KQ flight was horribly delayed. From 2.30 pm to arriving @ almost 3 am the following day. Jonathan kindly arranged for airport pick at this early hour of day and even rescheduled our departure for bwindi so we could get some rest. That was very accommodating.the drive to bwindi was a long drive -11 hrs- n he informed hotel of our late arrival. The lodge he chose for us was good and comfortable. However the vehicle for transporti g us could be better as it was quite hot without air conditioning. Gorilla trek was good but tough. Overall Ababa safaris were very accommodating. I wouldrecommend them. The hotel in Kampala- Speke hotel leaves a lot to be desired

Such a wonderful experience!! My family and I contacted Jonathan to help us plan our first Murchison Falls safari. Jonathan arranged our transport from Kampala, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary and guided game drives through Murchison falls. Ronnie, our professional driver and guide, was very knowledgeable and paid close attention to details to make us comfortable. He met with us a day before takeoff to answer any outstanding questions and recommended a time for us to set off to avoid any traffic. His experience made our trip even more enjoyable because we knew what to expect for entry fees into the park, where to stop to use clean washrooms, eat good food, and also what side of the boat cruise to sit on for the best views! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, job, rhinos, buffaloes and many other animals. We would definitely go with them for our next safari in Uganda! They had great communication, value for money, professionalism, knowledge of the industry and were very reliable.

A must-hire company! Punctual, professional, great communication. We used Ababa Safaris for a trip from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park. I would HIGHLY recommend! Our driver picked us up in a large safari vehicle with a pop up roof. The driver was very punctual and had excellent communication while preparing for the trip and during the trip. Ronnie took us to a nice restaurant for a rest stop that had clean bathrooms and good food. He was friendly with many people we met along the way at the Rhino Sanctuary, on the safari trails, and at our chosen lodging. It felt as though he had good connections with people, which we took as a good sign. Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the best places to see the animals and gave us a great safari experience. As the person in the family who does much of the planning, it was a very enjoyable experience to hand all of that over to Ababa and really get to enjoy myself.

Animals and beautiful nature in Uganda and Rwanda From being picked-up from Entebbe airport in the middle of the night until the drop-off eleven days later in Kigali it was a perfect tour. Jonathan, our guide, and the driver Moses was a perfect team - very friendly, knowledgable and always in time. We visited Entebbe for a tour through the botanical gardens and the zoo, did safaris and boat trips in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP and did trekkings to the chimpazees in Kibale and to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The primates are a must visit when you travel to this region. It's expensive but worth every dollar. The safari parks are of course not as rich in animals as for example the Masai Mara. But they are much cheaper, there are much lesser tourists and nevertheless it doesn't become boring regarding animal sightings. We saw a lot of different antelopes, beautiful giraffes, lions, many elephants, buffalos, a lot of hippos and crocodiles and much more. The choice of hotels was very good, simple and cheap where there was only a short overnight stay and a bit more expensive where it was worth to spend the money for staying close to the places of interest, e.g. close to the starting point for primate trekkings or in the middle of QENP and Murchison NP for not loosing game-drive-time.
