Trekking conditions can vary throughout the year.
The 9 Days Rwanda Tours Africa safari is designed for travelers seeking an immersive journey through Rwanda's remarkable landscapes, wildlife destinations, tropical forests, volcanic mountains and cultural attractions. The itinerary combines some of the country's most memorable experiences, including wildlife viewing in Akagera National Park, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, primate experiences, scenic exploration around Lake Kivu, and rainforest adventures in Nyungwe National Park.
Rwanda is often known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, and its compact size makes it possible to combine several contrasting destinations within one extended safari. Travelers can move from the savannah landscapes and wetlands of eastern Rwanda to the volcanic highlands of the north, the peaceful shores of Lake Kivu and the ancient rainforest ecosystems of the south. This combination creates a diverse Rwanda tour that goes beyond a single wildlife experience.
The 9 Days Rwanda Tours Africa itinerary provides opportunities to experience Rwanda's wildlife in different environments. In Akagera National Park, game drives can offer sightings of elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos and numerous bird species. The park's savannah, woodland, lakes and wetlands create a different safari environment from Rwanda's mountainous western and northern regions.
Wildlife sightings are naturally influenced by season, weather, habitat conditions and animal movements. No wildlife encounter can be guaranteed, but experienced guides use their knowledge of the park and recent sightings to help travelers explore productive areas while respecting conservation guidelines.
Akagera National Park provides the main savannah wildlife experience on this Rwanda safari. Located in eastern Rwanda, the park contains a combination of open grasslands, woodland, wetlands and lakes. Game drives allow travelers to explore these habitats while searching for large mammals, smaller antelopes, predators and diverse birdlife.
A boat experience on Lake Ihema, where included, provides a different way to explore Akagera. From the water, travelers may observe hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds while enjoying views across the lake and surrounding wetlands. The experience complements traditional game drives and adds a scenic dimension to the wildlife safari.
The journey then continues toward Volcanoes National Park, one of Rwanda's most important destinations for mountain gorilla trekking. The park protects part of the Virunga volcanic mountain range and contains montane forests that provide habitat for mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is one of the major highlights of this 9-day itinerary. After a briefing from park officials, travelers enter the forest accompanied by trained guides and trackers. The duration and difficulty of the trek can vary depending on the location of the gorilla group assigned to the trekking party, terrain and weather conditions.
Once the gorilla family is located, travelers have an opportunity to observe these remarkable primates in their natural habitat while following the applicable park rules and viewing guidelines. The experience combines wildlife observation with an appreciation of the conservation work protecting Rwanda's mountain gorillas.
Depending on availability and the selected itinerary, golden monkey trekking can provide another opportunity to explore the biodiversity of Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkeys are associated with the Virunga region and live in the forest and bamboo habitats of the volcanic mountains. Their active behavior and distinctive appearance make the experience different from gorilla trekking.
The safari also allows time to explore Rwanda beyond its wildlife. Cultural experiences can introduce travelers to local traditions, crafts, food, music and community life. Depending on the itinerary, these experiences can be incorporated around Kigali, Musanze, Lake Kivu or other destinations along the route.
Lake Kivu adds a scenic and relaxing element to the journey. One of Africa's Great Lakes, it is surrounded by hills, green landscapes and lakeside communities. Travelers can enjoy time along the shoreline, take a boat excursion where available, explore the surrounding area or simply relax after trekking and wildlife activities.
The journey continues toward Nyungwe National Park, one of Rwanda's most important rainforest destinations. Its extensive montane forest supports a remarkable diversity of primates, birds, plants and other wildlife. The forest environment provides a strong contrast to the savannah landscapes of Akagera and the volcanic terrain around Volcanoes National Park.
Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe is another major experience that can be included in this Rwanda tour. Travelers enter the forest with guides and trackers to search for habituated chimpanzee communities. Chimpanzees can move through the forest canopy and understory, so sightings and viewing conditions can vary.
Nyungwe also offers opportunities for forest walks, birdwatching and other nature experiences, depending on the itinerary and activities available during the visit. The forest is particularly valuable for travelers interested in Rwanda's primate diversity and the wider biodiversity of the Albertine Rift.
For travelers interested in birds, the 9 Days Rwanda Tours Africa itinerary can incorporate birdwatching across several habitats. Akagera's wetlands and savannahs, Volcanoes' montane forests and Nyungwe's rainforest provide opportunities to encounter different bird species. Travelers with specific birding interests can request a more specialized itinerary.
Kigali provides both the beginning and end of the journey and can be incorporated into the safari as more than simply an arrival and departure point. Depending on flight schedules, travelers may explore selected city attractions, local markets, cultural sites and other points of interest.
One possible highlight is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where visitors can learn about Rwanda's history and the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Visits should be approached respectfully, as the memorial is a place of remembrance and education.
The route can be adjusted according to the traveler's interests, arrival and departure times, accommodation preferences and selected activities. Some travelers may prefer additional time for gorilla trekking and primate experiences, while others may want to emphasize wildlife viewing, Lake Kivu relaxation, cultural activities or birdwatching.
Accommodation can also be arranged according to different travel styles and budgets. Luxury Rwanda safaris can include upscale lodges, hotels and tented camps, while mid-range and budget options provide practical alternatives for travelers seeking different levels of comfort and pricing.
The 9 Days Rwanda Tours Africa safari is suitable for travelers looking for a combination of wildlife, primates, nature, culture and scenic landscapes rather than a single-destination experience. It brings together Rwanda's major tourism regions while allowing enough time to experience the country's contrasting environments.
Whether you are searching for a 9 day Rwanda tour, Rwanda safari tours, a Rwanda gorilla trekking tour, a Rwanda wildlife safari, a Rwanda chimpanzee tracking tour, or a combined Akagera, Volcanoes and Nyungwe safari, this itinerary can be tailored around your travel dates and priorities.
With game drives in Akagera National Park, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, optional golden monkey trekking, time around Lake Kivu, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe and cultural experiences in and around Kigali, the 9 Days Rwanda Tours Africa itinerary offers a comprehensive introduction to Rwanda's wildlife, primates, landscapes and heritage.

Highly recommended We had a wonderful experience with Jonathan. He welcomed us at the airport and took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the end of our trip. The selection of hotels was impeccable, and the route he designed was perfectly planned. Jonathan is extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and went the extra mile to make sure we saw lions and all of the Big Five during our visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. He was always attentive, patient, and eager to make our experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended!![]()

Exceptional experience, enriching and truly unforgettable. From the moment we landed we received a warm welcome. Jonathan was friendly and readily available to answer any queries throughout our trip. He was incredibly accommodating with our requests to visit schools, residences ensuring that we achieved everything we wanted from the trip. We had a great time with Jonathan and driver Isaac. Jonathan was very funny and very knowledgeable he became part of the family and the time just flew whilst we were there, we felt safe at all times. The food at each venue catered for all our needs. Definitely leant a lot on this trip. Just need to be aware that food ordered in restaurants do take a long time as they make it from scratch so if pushed for time might be advisable to pre order. We had unforgettable holiday and this company went above and beyond to make every moment special. I would recommend them to anyone.![]()

.gorilla trek Our KQ flight was horribly delayed. From 2.30 pm to arriving @ almost 3 am the following day. Jonathan kindly arranged for airport pick at this early hour of day and even rescheduled our departure for bwindi so we could get some rest. That was very accommodating.the drive to bwindi was a long drive -11 hrs- n he informed hotel of our late arrival. The lodge he chose for us was good and comfortable. However the vehicle for transporti g us could be better as it was quite hot without air conditioning. Gorilla trek was good but tough. Overall Ababa safaris were very accommodating. I wouldrecommend them. The hotel in Kampala- Speke hotel leaves a lot to be desired![]()

Such a wonderful experience!! My family and I contacted Jonathan to help us plan our first Murchison Falls safari. Jonathan arranged our transport from Kampala, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary and guided game drives through Murchison falls. Ronnie, our professional driver and guide, was very knowledgeable and paid close attention to details to make us comfortable. He met with us a day before takeoff to answer any outstanding questions and recommended a time for us to set off to avoid any traffic. His experience made our trip even more enjoyable because we knew what to expect for entry fees into the park, where to stop to use clean washrooms, eat good food, and also what side of the boat cruise to sit on for the best views! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, job, rhinos, buffaloes and many other animals. We would definitely go with them for our next safari in Uganda! They had great communication, value for money, professionalism, knowledge of the industry and were very reliable.![]()

A must-hire company! Punctual, professional, great communication. We used Ababa Safaris for a trip from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park. I would HIGHLY recommend! Our driver picked us up in a large safari vehicle with a pop up roof. The driver was very punctual and had excellent communication while preparing for the trip and during the trip. Ronnie took us to a nice restaurant for a rest stop that had clean bathrooms and good food. He was friendly with many people we met along the way at the Rhino Sanctuary, on the safari trails, and at our chosen lodging. It felt as though he had good connections with people, which we took as a good sign. Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the best places to see the animals and gave us a great safari experience. As the person in the family who does much of the planning, it was a very enjoyable experience to hand all of that over to Ababa and really get to enjoy myself.![]()

Animals and beautiful nature in Uganda and Rwanda From being picked-up from Entebbe airport in the middle of the night until the drop-off eleven days later in Kigali it was a perfect tour. Jonathan, our guide, and the driver Moses was a perfect team - very friendly, knowledgable and always in time. We visited Entebbe for a tour through the botanical gardens and the zoo, did safaris and boat trips in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP and did trekkings to the chimpazees in Kibale and to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The primates are a must visit when you travel to this region. It's expensive but worth every dollar. The safari parks are of course not as rich in animals as for example the Masai Mara. But they are much cheaper, there are much lesser tourists and nevertheless it doesn't become boring regarding animal sightings. We saw a lot of different antelopes, beautiful giraffes, lions, many elephants, buffalos, a lot of hippos and crocodiles and much more. The choice of hotels was very good, simple and cheap where there was only a short overnight stay and a bit more expensive where it was worth to spend the money for staying close to the places of interest, e.g. close to the starting point for primate trekkings or in the middle of QENP and Murchison NP for not loosing game-drive-time.![]()
