Discover Semuliki National Park
Uganda-based safari specialists creating customized wildlife, primate, birding and cultural journeys.
Semuliki National Park is Uganda's most extraordinary ecological secret — a genuine eastern extension of the Congo Basin rainforest that protects 220 km² of pristine lowland tropical jungle along the floor of the Albertine Rift Valley. Unlike Uganda's more famous montane forests, Semuliki sits at just 670-760 meters above sea level, creating a hot, humid climate that nurtures a true Central African ecosystem with species found nowhere else in East Africa.
The park's star attraction is the Sempaya Hot Springs — a dramatic geothermal wonder where boiling water reaching 103°C erupts from the earth in a spectacular display of the Rift Valley's volcanic power. Visitors can boil an egg in the springs in minutes, a vivid reminder of the geological forces that shaped this landscape. Beyond the hot springs, Semuliki National Park is a world-class birding destination, sheltering 441 bird species, 35 of which are Congo-Guinean specialists found nowhere else in East Africa.
Whether you are a serious birdwatcher seeking the elusive Nkulengu Rail, a nature lover drawn to the mystique of the Congo forest, or a safari traveler eager to experience Uganda's most distinctive ecosystem, Semuliki National Park delivers an adventure found nowhere else in the country. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to plan the perfect Semuliki safari — from the Sempaya Hot Springs and entrance fees to accommodation, activities, the best time to visit, and how to combine Semuliki with Uganda's other spectacular national parks.

The Main Attraction
_______
The Sempaya Hot Springs
Boiling geothermal water at 103°C erupts from the earth in a dramatic display of the Albertine Rift Valley's volcanic power.

The Geothermal Experience
_______
The Sempaya Hot Springs are the undisputed highlight of Semuliki National Park, reached by a short, scenic walk through the rainforest. The male spring, known locally as Bitente, erupts as a dramatic geyser, shooting boiling water and steam up to two meters into the air — a raw, powerful reminder of the geothermal activity beneath the Rift Valley floor.
A short distance away, the female spring, called Nyasimbi, forms a quieter geothermal pool surrounded by lush forest, where local communities have traditionally cooked food for generations. Here, your guide will demonstrate boiling an egg directly in the 103°C water — a memorable, family-friendly highlight of any visit to Semuliki National Park.
Male Spring (Bitente)
Geyser up to 2m
Female Spring (Nyasimbi)
Tranquil hot pool
Water Temperature
103°C (217°F)
The water is dangerously hot — visitors must stay on marked paths and follow their ranger guide's instructions at all times.
The Sempaya Hot Springs Walk
The hot springs are reached by a short, guided forest walk from the park headquarters at Sempaya. The path winds through beautiful lowland rainforest, offering the chance to see birds and primates on the way, before opening onto the dramatic geothermal pools.
The walk is gentle and family-friendly, lasting roughly an hour and a half round trip. Your ranger guide shares the geology of the Rift Valley and the cultural stories of the springs as you go.
Cultural Importance of the Hot Springs
The Sempaya Hot Springs are far more than a tourist attraction. For the Bamaga and Bakonzo communities of the Semliki Valley, the springs hold deep spiritual and cultural significance, tied to traditional beliefs and rituals that predate the national park.
Visitors are asked to treat the springs with respect, follow their guide's instructions, and remain mindful that this is a living cultural landscape, not merely a photo opportunity.
Can You Boil an Egg at Sempaya Hot Springs?
Yes. At 103°C, the geothermal water is hot enough to cook an egg in just a few minutes, and your guide will demonstrate this at the male spring (Bitente) — a fun and memorable highlight of any visit. It is a vivid, family-friendly illustration of the Rift Valley's volcanic geology.
Safety warning: the water is dangerously hot and can cause severe burns. Always stay on the marked path, never touch the boiling water or the spring edge, and follow your ranger guide's instructions at all times. Do not attempt to approach the springs independently.

Sempaya Hot Springs
The park's famous geothermal springs are among its signature attractions and provide a dramatic forest experience.
Exceptional Birding
Semuliki is particularly important for birdwatchers searching for forest species and birds associated with the Albertine Rift and Guinea-Congo biome.
Forest Primates
Guided forest experiences provide opportunities to look for several primate species and other forest wildlife.
Photography
Forest textures, birds, primates, vegetation and geothermal landscapes create varied photography opportunities.
Cultural Experiences
Visitors can learn about communities and cultural traditions connected to the forest and surrounding landscapes.

Forest elephants, red colobus, De Brazza's monkeys, water chevrotain and the elusive pygmy hippo all occur near the eastern limit of their range, alongside rare forest cats.
Congo Basin Rainforest
Semuliki protects a genuine lowland extension of the vast Congo Basin — the only place in Uganda where a true Central African jungle meets the Albertine Rift. Walking here feels a world apart from the rest of the country.
Fewer Crowds
Semuliki receives far fewer visitors than Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth, giving you a private, unhurried forest and birding experience even in high season.
Easy Western Uganda Combinations
Semuliki sits within reach of Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and the Rwenzori, making it a superb addition to a classic western Uganda safari itinerary.

_______
About Semuliki & the Congo Basin Rainforest
A Lowland Forest Unlike Any Other in Uganda
Most of Uganda's famous forests are montane or mid-altitude — Bwindi and the Rwenzori sit high on the Rift escarpment and are cool and misty. Semuliki is the opposite. At just 670-760 metres above sea level, its climate is hot, humid and equatorial, exactly like the heart of Central Africa. This low altitude and the park's position at the head of the Congo Basin determine everything about its ecology — its vegetation, wildlife and birds.
Because Semuliki shares its climate and flora with the Congo Basin rather than with the rest of Uganda, it harbours a community of Congo-Guinean species at the very edge of their global range. The damp, steaming forest is dense with tall hardwood trees, lianas and understorey vegetation, watered by high rainfall and persistent humidity year-round. This is what makes a walk at Semuliki feel like stepping into the Congo — a genuinely different ecosystem to anywhere else in the Pearl of Africa.
Why the forest differs from Bwindi and Kibale: Bwindi is a montane temperate-style forest famous for gorillas, and Kibale is a mid-altitude forest famed for primates. Semuliki is Uganda's only lowland Congo Basin rainforest. That single fact explains why it claims 35 bird species found nowhere else in East Africa and a mammal community drawn from Central Africa — and why it has no equivalent anywhere else in the country.
Congo Basin Connection
- Semuliki is physically connected to the vast Ituri Forest of the DRC, making it Uganda's true slice of Central African wilderness.
Albertine Rift Setting
- The park sits on the floor of the Albertine Rift, a globally significant biodiversity hotspot running the length of western Uganda.
Equatorial Climate
- Hot, humid and wet year-round, with rainfall in every month and a lush, evergreen lowland forest canopy.

_______
Where Is Semuliki National Park?
Semuliki National Park is located in Bundibugyo District in western Uganda, on the eastern side of the Albertine Rift and near the Rwenzori Mountains.
Its geographical position helps explain the park's unusual biodiversity. The forest sits close to the ecological transition between East African and Central African environments, creating habitats for species that are not commonly associated with Uganda's savannah parks.
For safari travelers, Fort Portal is an important gateway town for western Uganda. Many itineraries use Fort Portal as a base or stopover before continuing toward Semuliki.
The route can also be combined with Kibale National Park, making it possible to create a forest-focused western Uganda safari that includes chimpanzee experiences, birding and Semuliki's geothermal attractions.
Semuliki National Park from Kampala
Uganda Wildlife Authority states that the Kampala–Fort Portal route via Mubende is approximately 180 km and takes around four to five hours to Fort Portal. The onward journey to Semuliki takes additional time depending on the route, road conditions and stops.

The Kirumia River trail and the Sempaya area are the most productive forest birding sites, best worked at first light when the forest chorus peaks.
A specialist birding guide makes all the difference, locating species by call deep in the canopy. Whether you are a first-time birder on a short forest walk or a serious lister chasing endemics, Semuliki rewards patience and early starts. Recent bird lists and current conditions should be confirmed with your operator or UWA before travel.

While Semuliki's chimpanzees are not habituated, forest walks offer the chance for opportunistic sightings. Combine with nearby Kibale National Park for guaranteed chimpanzee tracking.
Butterfly Watching
Semuliki's lowland rainforest is a haven for butterflies, with over 300 species recorded. The park is a delight for entomology enthusiasts and photographers alike.
About chimpanzees at Semuliki: Semuliki is home to wild chimpanzees, but they are not habituated for tourism in the way they are at Kibale National Park, so sightings here are opportunistic rather than assured. Semuliki is not positioned as a dedicated chimpanzee-tracking destination. For a more reliable experience, we recommend combining Semuliki with Kibale National Park, which is a few hours away and known for habituated chimpanzee communities. Sightings are never guaranteed at either park.
