Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations, renowned for its vast golden grasslands, abundant wildlife, dramatic predator encounters and the extraordinary Great Migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. Located in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti forms part of the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, creating one of East Africa’s most remarkable landscapes for a Tanzania safari.

A Serengeti National Park safari is about far more than following the movement of the migration. Across its plains, woodlands, kopjes and river systems, changing rainfall and grazing patterns influence where wildlife gathers and how predators hunt. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and large herds of plains game can be encountered throughout the year, although the character of the safari changes with the season.

For travellers planning a Serengeti safari, the experience can be tailored around what matters most to them. The Great Migration safari may be the priority, with an itinerary designed around seasonal herd movements and river-crossing areas. Wildlife photographers may prefer additional time in regions known for predator activity, while couples may choose an intimate luxury camp overlooking the plains. Families can benefit from shorter game drives, thoughtfully selected lodges and a more relaxed safari pace.

The key to an exceptional Serengeti safari tour is therefore not simply choosing the park; it is choosing the right combination of season, location, accommodation and experiences. Your travel dates, wildlife interests, preferred level of luxury and available time should shape the itinerary rather than being fitted into a predetermined package.

The Serengeti is not one safari experience. It changes with landscape, season, wildlife movement and the way you choose to travel.

The Serengeti story

_______

A safari shaped by space, wildlife and movement

The Serengeti is defined by vast open plains, rich wildlife and the seasonal movement of millions of grazing animals. A Serengeti safari brings opportunities to encounter lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes and large herds of wildebeest and zebra within the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. From dramatic predator encounters to quiet moments across the golden plains, every game drive reveals a different side of Tanzania’s iconic wilderness.

The landscape also changes with rainfall, grazing patterns and wildlife movements, making the timing and location of your safari important. Whether you are planning a Great Migration safari, a private wildlife adventure or a luxury Serengeti safari, a carefully designed itinerary allows you to experience the park at a pace that suits your interests.

Why visit Serengeti?

_______

What makes a Serengeti safari distinctive?

Serengeti combines enormous open landscapes with an unusually rich concentration of wildlife. The result is a destination where the setting remains as important as the individual sightings.

The Great Migration

The annual movement of wildebeest, zebra and other grazers through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the defining wildlife spectacles of East Africa. The timing and location change with rainfall and grazing conditions, so experienced itinerary planning matters.

Exceptional predator country

Serengeti's productive grasslands support large herbivore populations and a major predator-prey system. Lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas are among the species travellers may encounter during game drives.

Endless horizons

Open grasslands, rocky kopjes, river corridors and woodland create a landscape that changes considerably from one area to another. Sunrise and sunset can become part of the safari itself.

Big Five wildlife

Serengeti supports lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. Sightings remain wild and unpredictable, which is precisely what makes each game drive different.

Extraordinary photography

The open terrain offers opportunities for wide landscape compositions as well as detailed wildlife photography. Migration scenes, predators, kopjes and golden-hour light provide varied subjects throughout a safari.

A safari designed around you

Private travel allows greater flexibility in daily timing, photography stops, accommodation selection and the balance between long game drives and slower days in camp.

Great Migration

_______

Understanding the Great Migration in Serengeti

The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles. Rather than occurring on a fixed date, it is a continuous natural cycle in which millions of wildebeest, together with zebra and other grazing animals, move across the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water.

From January to March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region are closely associated with the calving season, when large herds gather and predators become particularly active. As conditions change, the migration gradually moves through central and western Serengeti before reaching the northern Serengeti later in the year.

Between approximately August and October, northern Serengeti may offer opportunities to witness dramatic Mara River crossings, although their timing and location are naturally unpredictable. By November and December, the herds generally begin moving south again as seasonal rains return.

The ideal time for a Serengeti migration safari depends on your interests, whether that means witnessing calving, following large herds, enjoying predator encounters or exploring the northern landscapes. With expert planning and flexible routing, your Serengeti safari can be designed around seasonal wildlife movements while allowing nature to shape the experience.

Safari planning

_______

Best Time to Visit Serengeti National Park

There is no single best month for every traveller. The right time depends on whether your priority is the Great Migration, calving, general wildlife viewing, photography, lower-season travel or a particular style of accommodation.

The dry season is widely considered an important period for wildlife-focused safaris. Vegetation can be less dense and animals may be easier to observe around remaining water sources.

For travellers, the northern Serengeti becomes especially important during parts of this period. However, river crossings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed simply because a traveller visits during a particular month.

Early-year travel can be particularly interesting for travellers interested in the calving cycle. Young wildebeest and other herbivores attract predators, creating a dynamic wildlife environment.

This period can be especially appealing to photographers and travellers who want to understand the migration as an ecological cycle rather than focusing only on river crossings.

The green season can bring lush scenery, dramatic skies and a different visual character to the Serengeti. Rainfall can influence road conditions and animal distribution, so itinerary design becomes particularly important.

Seasonal rains can refresh the grasslands and influence the movement of grazing herds. Travellers willing to work with changing weather can experience a quieter and visually rich Serengeti.

If your priority is a specific migration experience, tell us your travel dates first. We can then shape the route around the seasonal pattern rather than selling you a generic Serengeti package.

Wildlife safari

_______

Wildlife in Serengeti National Park

Serengeti's wildlife reputation comes from the relationship between abundant grazing animals, predators and the changing habitats of the ecosystem.

The Big Five

Serengeti supports the species traditionally grouped as Africa's Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros.

Lions

Lions are among the most visible large predators of the Serengeti. Open plains can make them easier to observe, while prides may use shade, grass and rocky areas according to conditions.

Leopards

Leopards are more elusive and often require patient searching around suitable cover, trees and riverine areas. A private safari can be useful for travellers who want to spend additional time searching rather than moving rapidly between sightings.

Elephants

Elephant sightings can occur in different Serengeti habitats, particularly around woodland and water-associated areas.

Buffalo

Large buffalo herds contribute to the abundance of herbivores that support the Serengeti's wider predator-prey system.

Rhinoceros

Rhinoceros are present but considerably less predictable than more abundant species. Seeing one is never something a safari operator should guarantee.

Landscapes

_______

Serengeti Habitats and Landscapes

Understanding Serengeti's landscapes helps explain why wildlife distribution changes from one part of the park to another.

Open Plains

Vast grasslands provide the visual identity most associated with Serengeti and support large grazing herds.

Kopjes

Rocky outcrops create elevated viewpoints, shade and habitat for wildlife. They are also distinctive photographic features.

River Corridors

Rivers and associated vegetation provide water, cover and important wildlife habitat, particularly during drier periods.

Woodlands

Wooded landscapes complement open grasslands, offering diverse habitats for a wider variety of wildlife.

Serengeti experiences

_______

Things to Do in Serengeti National Park

Your Serengeti safari can be tailored around wildlife viewing, photography, breathtaking landscapes, relaxation, or a combination of unforgettable luxury safari experiences.

Private Game Drives

Private game drives are at the heart of most Serengeti safari experiences. Travelling in a private safari vehicle gives you greater flexibility over departure times, wildlife viewing, photography stops and the pace of your day. With an experienced guide, you can explore the Serengeti’s diverse landscapes while searching for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo and other wildlife.

Great Migration Safaris

A Great Migration safari in Serengeti National Park is planned around seasonal wildlife movements. Carefully selected regions, accommodation and safari dates can increase opportunities to experience large wildebeest and zebra herds, calving areas and, seasonally, dramatic river-crossing activity. Because wildlife movements depend on rainfall and grazing conditions, flexible planning is essential.

Hot-Air Balloon Safari

A Serengeti hot-air balloon safari offers an unforgettable sunrise perspective over the vast plains. Drifting above the landscape as wildlife moves below creates a peaceful alternative to a traditional game drive. This experience is particularly appealing to couples, honeymooners, photographers and travellers celebrating a special occasion.

Wildlife Photography Safaris

The open landscapes, abundant wildlife and changing African light make Serengeti National Park an exceptional destination for wildlife photography. A private vehicle and longer safari stay allow photographers to spend more time observing animal behaviour, positioning for compositions and capturing the changing colours of sunrise and sunset.

Guided Walking Experiences

Where permitted, guided walking experiences in the Serengeti reveal a different side of the ecosystem. Accompanied by qualified guides, travellers can learn to identify animal tracks, plants, insects, birds and smaller wildlife while discovering ecological details that can easily be overlooked from a safari vehicle.

Bush Dining & Luxury Camp Life

A luxury Serengeti safari extends beyond wildlife viewing. Bush breakfasts, private dinners, campfire conversations, sundowners, secluded decks and Serengeti stargazing can become memorable parts of the journey. Carefully selected safari camps combine comfort with an authentic connection to the landscape, creating a refined experience between game drives.

Safari ideas

_______

Serengeti Safari Itineraries

Your itinerary should reflect how much time you have and whether Serengeti is the main destination or one chapter in a wider Tanzania or East Africa journey.

A focused Serengeti safari for travellers with limited time. Best when transfers are carefully planned and the itinerary concentrates on one primary wildlife area.

More breathing room for game drives, changing wildlife conditions and a slower safari rhythm.

Particularly useful for travellers who want to explore more than one Serengeti region or combine migration interests with a broader Tanzania itinerary.

Ideal for a comprehensive northern Tanzania journey including Serengeti, Ngorongoro and other destinations.

Where to Stay in Serengeti National Park

Choosing where to sleep is one of the most important decisions when planning a Serengeti safari.

The Serengeti is large, and moving repeatedly between distant areas can consume valuable wildlife-viewing time. The ideal accommodation location depends on your travel dates and the experience you are trying to create.

Luxury Lodges

Luxury lodges can suit travellers who value spacious rooms, refined dining, swimming pools, strong guiding and a higher level of comfort between game drives.

Luxury Tented Camps

Tented camps bring you closer to the visual character of the wilderness while retaining private bathrooms, comfortable beds, dining areas and carefully designed guest spaces.

Mobile Migration Camps

Mobile camps can be particularly attractive to travellers who want their accommodation positioned according to the seasonal movement of wildlife.

Central Serengeti

Central Serengeti, including the Seronera area, is strategically useful for travellers seeking a broad wildlife experience and access to different habitats.

Northern Serengeti

Northern Serengeti becomes especially relevant for migration itineraries during periods when herds are associated with the northern part of the ecosystem.

Getting there

_______

How to Get to Serengeti National Park

Serengeti can be reached by road or air, and the right choice depends on your itinerary, available time and budget.

Flying to Serengeti

Scheduled and charter flights can connect safari travellers with airstrips within or close to different Serengeti regions. Flying can save substantial road-transfer time and is particularly useful for travellers with limited days.

Arusha Airport

Arusha is an important safari hub and can be useful for connecting with regional flights and road-based itineraries.

Kilimanjaro International Airport

Many international travellers use Kilimanjaro International Airport as an arrival point for northern Tanzania safari itineraries.

Driving from Arusha

A road safari from Arusha can be rewarding because the journey becomes part of the wider Tanzania experience. However, road distances are significant, so the itinerary should allow enough time for both travel and wildlife viewing.

Flying to Serengeti

Scheduled and charter flights can connect safari travellers with airstrips within or close to different Serengeti regions. Flying can save substantial road-transfer time and is particularly useful for travellers with limited days.

Serengeti Safaris for Different Travellers

First-time visitors often benefit from a balanced itinerary rather than trying to chase every famous location. The goal is to spend meaningful time in the wilderness and allow wildlife encounters to develop naturally.

Highly recommended We had a wonderful experience with Jonathan. He welcomed us at the airport and took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the end of our trip. The selection of hotels was impeccable, and the route he designed was perfectly planned. Jonathan is extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and went the extra mile to make sure we saw lions and all of the Big Five during our visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. He was always attentive, patient, and eager to make our experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended!

Exceptional experience, enriching and truly unforgettable. From the moment we landed we received a warm welcome. Jonathan was friendly and readily available to answer any queries throughout our trip. He was incredibly accommodating with our requests to visit schools, residences ensuring that we achieved everything we wanted from the trip. We had a great time with Jonathan and driver Isaac. Jonathan was very funny and very knowledgeable he became part of the family and the time just flew whilst we were there, we felt safe at all times. The food at each venue catered for all our needs. Definitely leant a lot on this trip. Just need to be aware that food ordered in restaurants do take a long time as they make it from scratch so if pushed for time might be advisable to pre order. We had unforgettable holiday and this company went above and beyond to make every moment special. I would recommend them to anyone.

.gorilla trek Our KQ flight was horribly delayed. From 2.30 pm to arriving @ almost 3 am the following day. Jonathan kindly arranged for airport pick at this early hour of day and even rescheduled our departure for bwindi so we could get some rest. That was very accommodating.the drive to bwindi was a long drive -11 hrs- n he informed hotel of our late arrival. The lodge he chose for us was good and comfortable. However the vehicle for transporti g us could be better as it was quite hot without air conditioning. Gorilla trek was good but tough. Overall Ababa safaris were very accommodating. I wouldrecommend them. The hotel in Kampala- Speke hotel leaves a lot to be desired

Such a wonderful experience!! My family and I contacted Jonathan to help us plan our first Murchison Falls safari. Jonathan arranged our transport from Kampala, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary and guided game drives through Murchison falls. Ronnie, our professional driver and guide, was very knowledgeable and paid close attention to details to make us comfortable. He met with us a day before takeoff to answer any outstanding questions and recommended a time for us to set off to avoid any traffic. His experience made our trip even more enjoyable because we knew what to expect for entry fees into the park, where to stop to use clean washrooms, eat good food, and also what side of the boat cruise to sit on for the best views! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, job, rhinos, buffaloes and many other animals. We would definitely go with them for our next safari in Uganda! They had great communication, value for money, professionalism, knowledge of the industry and were very reliable.

A must-hire company! Punctual, professional, great communication. We used Ababa Safaris for a trip from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park. I would HIGHLY recommend! Our driver picked us up in a large safari vehicle with a pop up roof. The driver was very punctual and had excellent communication while preparing for the trip and during the trip. Ronnie took us to a nice restaurant for a rest stop that had clean bathrooms and good food. He was friendly with many people we met along the way at the Rhino Sanctuary, on the safari trails, and at our chosen lodging. It felt as though he had good connections with people, which we took as a good sign. Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the best places to see the animals and gave us a great safari experience. As the person in the family who does much of the planning, it was a very enjoyable experience to hand all of that over to Ababa and really get to enjoy myself.

Animals and beautiful nature in Uganda and Rwanda From being picked-up from Entebbe airport in the middle of the night until the drop-off eleven days later in Kigali it was a perfect tour. Jonathan, our guide, and the driver Moses was a perfect team - very friendly, knowledgable and always in time. We visited Entebbe for a tour through the botanical gardens and the zoo, did safaris and boat trips in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP and did trekkings to the chimpazees in Kibale and to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The primates are a must visit when you travel to this region. It's expensive but worth every dollar. The safari parks are of course not as rich in animals as for example the Masai Mara. But they are much cheaper, there are much lesser tourists and nevertheless it doesn't become boring regarding animal sightings. We saw a lot of different antelopes, beautiful giraffes, lions, many elephants, buffalos, a lot of hippos and crocodiles and much more. The choice of hotels was very good, simple and cheap where there was only a short overnight stay and a bit more expensive where it was worth to spend the money for staying close to the places of interest, e.g. close to the starting point for primate trekkings or in the middle of QENP and Murchison NP for not loosing game-drive-time.
