Uganda Fishing Safaris

Fish the legendary waters of the Nile, pursue powerful Nile perch beneath the wilderness of Murchison Falls, and experience Uganda through a private safari designed around the way you want to travel.

A Uganda fishing safari is more than a traditional fishing holiday. It is an opportunity to experience sport fishing in Uganda while pursuing powerful freshwater game fish in some of Africa’s most spectacular wilderness landscapes. From the legendary Nile perch fishing waters of the Victoria Nile to carefully selected fishing destinations, Uganda offers anglers an exciting combination of adventure, nature and authentic safari experiences.

For specialist anglers, Nile perch fishing in Uganda is a major attraction. These powerful freshwater predators have made the country increasingly popular among travellers searching for a Nile perch fishing safari in Uganda. The experience combines serious angling with the freedom of exploring remote rivers and waterways surrounded by Uganda’s remarkable wildlife.

However, the appeal of fishing safaris in Uganda extends beyond the catch. Depending on your itinerary, a day of fishing can be combined with game drives, boat safaris, dramatic waterfalls, riverine forests, birdwatching, cultural experiences and luxury safari lodges. This makes a Uganda fishing and wildlife safari ideal for anglers travelling with partners, families or friends.

We create custom Uganda fishing safaris around your priorities, including your target species, preferred fishing locations, number of fishing days, accommodation style, private guiding and the amount of time you want for wildlife and relaxation. Whether you are planning a luxury fishing safari in Uganda, a dedicated Nile perch fishing trip, or your first Uganda fishing holiday, we design a seamless journey around your interests.

Cast your line into the wild heart of Uganda, where the pursuit of the Nile perch becomes more than fishing, it becomes a journey through untamed rivers, breathtaking landscapes and authentic African wilderness.”

Beyond The Rod

_______

A fishing safari should feel like an African journey.

Uganda allows anglers to combine specialist fishing with some of East Africa's most immersive wilderness experiences.

Why Uganda

_______

What makes Uganda fishing safaris different?

Uganda fishing safaris combine exceptional Nile perch fishing with breathtaking wilderness, abundant wildlife and authentic African hospitality. From the Victoria Nile to Murchison Falls, anglers enjoy private fishing experiences surrounded by spectacular landscapes. Tailor-made itineraries also allow you to combine sport fishing with luxury lodges, wildlife viewing and unforgettable Ugandan adventures.

01 — THE NILE

Fish in a legendary river environment

Uganda's Nile provides a remarkable backdrop for anglers. Around the Murchison Falls landscape, the river moves through an exceptionally wild setting, creating a fishing experience that feels fundamentally different

02 — NILE PERCH

Pursue powerful freshwater predators

Nile perch are the headline species for many anglers visiting Uganda. Their reputation for power, size and explosive runs makes them a compelling target for experienced freshwater fishermen.

03 — WILDERNESS

Fish surrounded by African wildlife

Uganda's fishing experience can unfold alongside elephants, hippos, crocodiles, birds and other wildlife. The result is not merely a day of fishing but an immersive wilderness experience.

04 — FLEXIBILITY

Build the trip around you

Your safari can be designed for serious anglers, couples, families or small groups. Fishing days, accommodation, wildlife activities and transfers can all be coordinated into one seamless journey.

05 — PRIVATE GUIDING

More time focused on your objectives

A private safari gives your guide and itinerary room to respond to your interests. Whether your priority is fishing time, photography, wildlife or simply slowing the pace, the journey can be shaped accordingly.

06 — COMBINATION SAFARIS

Fishing is not the whole trip

Add game drives, boat cruises, chimpanzee trekking, gorilla trekking, birding, cultural experiences or relaxation to create a more complete Uganda itinerary.

Where To Fish

_______

Uganda fishing destinations worth exploring.

We match your fishing objectives with the right environment rather than forcing every angler into the same itinerary.

Murchison Falls National Park

For anglers interested in Nile perch fishing, Murchison Falls is the defining destination. Sport fishing is associated with the Nile below the falls, where the river creates a dramatic combination of powerful water, cliffs, wildlife and wilderness.

UWA identifies sport fishing as one of the activities available within the Murchison Falls landscape. Its official park information also describes the Victoria Nile and the park's extensive wildlife environment.

Jinja & The Nile

Jinja is synonymous with the Nile and can work well as the beginning or end of an adventure itinerary. Depending on your interests, the journey can combine the River Nile experiences, adventure activities and cultural exploration.

For travellers with limited time, a shorter Nile-focused experience can be incorporated into a broader Uganda journey rather than building the entire holiday around fishing.

The Victoria Nile

The Victoria Nile is central to Uganda's fishing story. The river connects dramatic scenery with exceptional biodiversity and provides opportunities to combine angling with a broader safari experience.

For travellers who want their fishing holiday to feel like a true expedition, the river offers an evocative sense of place that is difficult to replicate.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo provides a very different setting from the Nile. Its lake and wetland environment can be incorporated into a wider safari itinerary, especially for travellers moving between Kampala and western Uganda.

UWA's conservation tariff materials include sport fishing among the activities associated with Lake Mburo National Park.

Fishing itineraries designed around your time.

These are starting points rather than fixed packages. Your final safari is designed around fishing objectives, dates, accommodation preferences and additional experiences.

What is a Uganda fishing safari?

A Uganda fishing safari is a tailor-made African adventure combining sport fishing in Uganda with spectacular wilderness, wildlife, luxury accommodation and authentic local experiences. Unlike a conventional fishing holiday focused solely on one lake or river, a fishing safari in Uganda allows you to pursue exceptional freshwater fish while exploring some of Uganda’s most remarkable landscapes.

For many anglers, the highlight is Nile perch fishing in Uganda. The powerful Nile perch is one of Africa’s most sought-after freshwater sport fish, attracting anglers seeking an exciting challenge on the Nile River. The Victoria Nile, particularly around Murchison Falls National Park, provides a spectacular setting where serious fishing takes place within pristine African wilderness.

A luxury Uganda fishing safari goes beyond the catch. Imagine travelling at dawn with an experienced fishing guide, reading the river, targeting Nile perch and returning to an elegant safari lodge as the sun sets over the wilderness.

Your fishing holiday can also combine Uganda wildlife safaris, game drives, Nile boat cruises, chimpanzee trekking and gorilla trekking in Uganda. With private transport, carefully selected accommodation and personalised fishing arrangements, every journey can be designed around your interests.

For anglers seeking Nile perch fishing in Africa, Uganda offers an unforgettable combination of adventure, wilderness and luxury.

Nile perch fishing in Uganda

Nile perch is the species most closely associated with Nile perch fishing in Uganda, attracting freshwater anglers with its powerful strikes, strength and the challenge of targeting large fish.

Murchison Falls is particularly significant for Uganda fishing safaris because sport fishing takes place on the Victoria Nile below the falls. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) identifies this area as an established sport-fishing environment and highlights the exceptional size of Nile perch historically landed from the river.

However, no responsible Nile perch fishing safari in Uganda should guarantee a trophy catch. River conditions, water levels, weather, fishing pressure, technique and natural variation can all influence the outcome.

The goal is to create the best possible conditions for a rewarding Nile perch fishing experience: sufficient time on the water, experienced local guides, suitable equipment, a well-planned itinerary and realistic expectations.

Murchison Falls fishing safaris

Murchison Falls National Park is the flagship destination for travellers searching for a Uganda fishing safari centred on Nile perch.

The park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift and is characterised by savanna, woodland, riverine habitats and the Victoria Nile. UWA currently describes Murchison Falls as Uganda's largest and iconic safari destination, with a protected area of approximately 3,840 square kilometres.

For an angler, the significance of the landscape is difficult to overstate. Fishing takes place within a genuine wilderness environment rather than an isolated recreational lake.

Wildlife encounters can form part of the experience, although wildlife sightings should always be treated as natural opportunities rather than guaranteed events.

The wider Murchison Falls itinerary can include game drives across the savanna, a Nile boat experience, visits to viewpoints around the falls and time at a carefully selected safari lodge.

What makes a luxury Uganda fishing safari?

Luxury is not simply the price of the lodge. A genuinely premium fishing safari is defined by how intelligently the entire journey is designed.

That means selecting accommodation that complements the route, reducing unnecessary transfers, giving you sufficient time on the water, choosing experienced guides and allowing the itinerary to breathe.

For some travellers, luxury means a private vehicle, an elegant lodge and dedicated fishing arrangements. For others, it means an intimate camp in the wilderness, exceptional food, privacy and the freedom to change the pace of the day.

We therefore approach luxury as a combination of comfort, privacy, personalisation and intelligent logistics.

Private vehicles

A private safari vehicle allows the itinerary to be adapted around your group. You are not working around a large shared-tour schedule, which creates a more relaxed experience and makes combination safaris much easier.

Carefully selected accommodation

Accommodation should be selected according to location, access, atmosphere and the rhythm of the itinerary rather than simply choosing the most expensive property. The best lodge is the one that makes the journey work.

Dedicated fishing time

Anglers should know exactly how much time is allocated to fishing before the safari begins. A poorly designed itinerary can spend too much time driving and leave too little time for the experience that motivated the trip in the first place.

Local expertise

Local knowledge matters enormously in fishing. Water conditions, access, seasonal changes, local regulations and practical logistics can all influence the experience. Your safari designer should coordinate these details rather than leaving them to the traveller.

Best time for fishing in Uganda

The best time for fishing in Uganda depends on your destination, target species, fishing technique, weather, water levels and overall safari plans. There is no single month that guarantees perfect conditions for every Uganda fishing safari.

For anglers planning a Nile perch fishing safari in Uganda, the Victoria Nile and Murchison Falls fishing environment should be considered carefully. River conditions, water levels and local weather can influence where and how anglers fish, making experienced local guides valuable when planning your trip.

Uganda's climate varies across different regions and elevations, so a general safari calendar should not automatically be applied to every fishing destination. Instead, your itinerary should be designed around the specific fishing experience you want.

If fishing is your main objective, plan the safari around your target species and preferred fishing technique first, then add wildlife and other experiences. If fishing is part of a wider Uganda wildlife safari, choose the season that best suits your wildlife and primate interests before incorporating fishing.

With expert planning, you can combine Nile perch fishing in Uganda, wildlife viewing and luxury safari experiences into one unforgettable adventure.

How much does a Uganda fishing safari cost?

The cost of a Uganda fishing safari varies depending on your travel dates, safari duration, fishing location, accommodation, transport and the type of fishing experience you choose. Most Uganda fishing safari packages are privately tailored rather than fixed, allowing your itinerary to match your budget and fishing objectives.

For a Nile perch fishing safari in Uganda, the overall price may include accommodation, private 4x4 transportation, professional fishing guides, boat arrangements, fishing equipment, park entry fees and applicable fishing permits. The number of fishing days and additional activities can also influence your final Uganda fishing safari price.

A short fishing-focused trip can cost less than an extended luxury safari combining Nile perch fishing with wildlife viewing, gorilla trekking or other Uganda safari experiences.

Rather than relying on a generic advertised price, we recommend requesting a personalised Uganda fishing safari quote based on your dates, number of travellers, preferred accommodation and fishing requirements.

Official UWA conservation fees, park charges and fishing permits may change, so applicable rates should always be confirmed when booking.

Fishing Equipment and Preparation for a Nile Perch Fishing Safari in Uganda

Preparing the right fishing equipment for a Nile perch fishing safari in Uganda helps you enjoy a more comfortable and productive experience on the water. Your tackle requirements will depend on the fishing method, target species, fishing location and local water conditions.

Before travelling, confirm whether essential fishing gear is included in your Uganda fishing safari package, available for hire or recommended for you to bring from home. Experienced anglers may prefer their own rods, reels, lines, lures and specialist tackle because familiar equipment can improve confidence and handling.

For international travellers, hiring suitable equipment locally can be a convenient alternative to carrying additional baggage. Your safari operator can advise on the tackle available for your chosen fishing destination, including Nile perch fishing in Murchison Falls National Park and other recognised fishing areas in Uganda.

Essential personal items may include lightweight clothing, a hat, polarised sunglasses, sunscreen, waterproof layers and a small dry bag for valuables.

Most importantly, confirm fishing permits, park fees, equipment arrangements and other applicable requirements before departure. Requirements can vary by destination and may change over time. Planning these details in advance allows you to concentrate on the experience and enjoy your Nile perch fishing adventure in Uganda.

Combine Fishing with a Uganda Wildlife Safari

Combine an unforgettable Uganda fishing safari with the country’s spectacular wildlife and wilderness experiences. For travellers interested in Nile perch fishing in Uganda, Murchison Falls offers the opportunity to pursue powerful Nile perch on the Victoria Nile while enjoying classic African safari experiences nearby. Extend your journey with wildlife game drives and boat safaris in Murchison Falls National Park, or continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park for more wildlife encounters.

With additional time, your Uganda fishing and wildlife safari can include chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, birdwatching in the Albertine Rift and authentic cultural experiences.

Combining fishing with wildlife creates a richer Uganda safari experience, allowing you to enjoy adventure, nature, wildlife and culture in one carefully planned journey. Whether you are a serious angler or a first-time safari traveller, we can tailor your itinerary around your interests, travel dates and preferred level of comfort.

Responsible fishing and conservation

Responsible tourism is fundamental to a quality fishing safari.

Fishing in protected areas must be conducted according to applicable regulations and permits. Travellers should follow the instructions of guides and park authorities, respect wildlife, avoid littering and minimise their environmental footprint.

Catch-and-release practices may form part of responsible sport fishing depending on the local regulations, species, method and conditions. Your safari operator should provide current guidance rather than relying on assumptions.

Conservation is not separate from luxury travel. The most meaningful wilderness experiences depend on protecting the landscapes that make them possible.

How to plan your Uganda fishing safari

The best fishing itineraries begin with a conversation, not a generic package.

Tell us what you want from the journey: your preferred dates, number of travellers, fishing experience, target species, preferred accommodation level, desired fishing days and any wildlife or cultural experiences you want to add.

We can then design the route around those priorities.

This approach also helps identify logistical issues early, including transfer times, accommodation availability, activity permits and the practical amount of fishing time available.

The result is a safari that feels intentional rather than assembled from disconnected hotel bookings and activities.

Highly recommended We had a wonderful experience with Jonathan. He welcomed us at the airport and took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the end of our trip. The selection of hotels was impeccable, and the route he designed was perfectly planned. Jonathan is extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and went the extra mile to make sure we saw lions and all of the Big Five during our visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. He was always attentive, patient, and eager to make our experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended!

Exceptional experience, enriching and truly unforgettable. From the moment we landed we received a warm welcome. Jonathan was friendly and readily available to answer any queries throughout our trip. He was incredibly accommodating with our requests to visit schools, residences ensuring that we achieved everything we wanted from the trip. We had a great time with Jonathan and driver Isaac. Jonathan was very funny and very knowledgeable he became part of the family and the time just flew whilst we were there, we felt safe at all times. The food at each venue catered for all our needs. Definitely leant a lot on this trip. Just need to be aware that food ordered in restaurants do take a long time as they make it from scratch so if pushed for time might be advisable to pre order. We had unforgettable holiday and this company went above and beyond to make every moment special. I would recommend them to anyone.

.gorilla trek Our KQ flight was horribly delayed. From 2.30 pm to arriving @ almost 3 am the following day. Jonathan kindly arranged for airport pick at this early hour of day and even rescheduled our departure for bwindi so we could get some rest. That was very accommodating.the drive to bwindi was a long drive -11 hrs- n he informed hotel of our late arrival. The lodge he chose for us was good and comfortable. However the vehicle for transporti g us could be better as it was quite hot without air conditioning. Gorilla trek was good but tough. Overall Ababa safaris were very accommodating. I wouldrecommend them. The hotel in Kampala- Speke hotel leaves a lot to be desired

Such a wonderful experience!! My family and I contacted Jonathan to help us plan our first Murchison Falls safari. Jonathan arranged our transport from Kampala, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary and guided game drives through Murchison falls. Ronnie, our professional driver and guide, was very knowledgeable and paid close attention to details to make us comfortable. He met with us a day before takeoff to answer any outstanding questions and recommended a time for us to set off to avoid any traffic. His experience made our trip even more enjoyable because we knew what to expect for entry fees into the park, where to stop to use clean washrooms, eat good food, and also what side of the boat cruise to sit on for the best views! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, job, rhinos, buffaloes and many other animals. We would definitely go with them for our next safari in Uganda! They had great communication, value for money, professionalism, knowledge of the industry and were very reliable.

A must-hire company! Punctual, professional, great communication. We used Ababa Safaris for a trip from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park. I would HIGHLY recommend! Our driver picked us up in a large safari vehicle with a pop up roof. The driver was very punctual and had excellent communication while preparing for the trip and during the trip. Ronnie took us to a nice restaurant for a rest stop that had clean bathrooms and good food. He was friendly with many people we met along the way at the Rhino Sanctuary, on the safari trails, and at our chosen lodging. It felt as though he had good connections with people, which we took as a good sign. Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the best places to see the animals and gave us a great safari experience. As the person in the family who does much of the planning, it was a very enjoyable experience to hand all of that over to Ababa and really get to enjoy myself.

Animals and beautiful nature in Uganda and Rwanda From being picked-up from Entebbe airport in the middle of the night until the drop-off eleven days later in Kigali it was a perfect tour. Jonathan, our guide, and the driver Moses was a perfect team - very friendly, knowledgable and always in time. We visited Entebbe for a tour through the botanical gardens and the zoo, did safaris and boat trips in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP and did trekkings to the chimpazees in Kibale and to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The primates are a must visit when you travel to this region. It's expensive but worth every dollar. The safari parks are of course not as rich in animals as for example the Masai Mara. But they are much cheaper, there are much lesser tourists and nevertheless it doesn't become boring regarding animal sightings. We saw a lot of different antelopes, beautiful giraffes, lions, many elephants, buffalos, a lot of hippos and crocodiles and much more. The choice of hotels was very good, simple and cheap where there was only a short overnight stay and a bit more expensive where it was worth to spend the money for staying close to the places of interest, e.g. close to the starting point for primate trekkings or in the middle of QENP and Murchison NP for not loosing game-drive-time.
