The Uganda on foot

_______

Uganda Hiking Safaris

Walk beyond the ordinary and discover Uganda on foot through ancient rainforests, volcanic valleys, mountain landscapes, waterfalls and some of East Africa's most extraordinary wilderness.

Uganda Hiking Safaris offer a more intimate way to experience the Pearl of Africa, taking you beyond conventional game drives and into the landscapes themselves. From ancient rainforests and mist-covered mountains to cascading waterfalls and highland valleys, hiking in Uganda allows you to explore the country's remarkable wilderness at walking pace.

Rather than simply travelling between viewpoints, Uganda hiking tours invite you to become part of the landscape. Follow forest trails beneath towering canopies, climb through lush highland vegetation, cross dramatic mountain valleys and discover spectacular waterfalls while listening to birdsong and the natural sounds of the wilderness. Every trail reveals a different side of Uganda.

What makes Uganda hiking safaris particularly appealing is the freedom to combine adventure with comfort. Your hiking experience can be paired with beautiful safari lodges, private guides, carefully planned transfers, excellent dining and relaxing stays between active days. Whether you are an experienced trekker or simply looking for scenic nature walks, your itinerary can be tailored around your preferred pace and fitness level.

Uganda offers an exceptional variety of hiking destinations. The Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda provide some of East Africa's most dramatic mountain trekking experiences, while Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda offers expansive highland landscapes, forests and waterfalls. In southwestern Uganda, the ancient trails of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the volcanic landscapes of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park create unforgettable opportunities for forest hiking and mountain walks. For a more accessible adventure, Sipi Falls hiking combines scenic trails, cascading waterfalls, coffee-growing landscapes and spectacular views.

At Ababa Uganda Safaris, we believe the best Uganda hiking tours should feel personal, purposeful and beautifully paced. Our local safari specialists design tailor-made Uganda hiking safaris around your interests, travel dates, fitness level, preferred accommodation and appetite for adventure. Hiking can be the focus of your journey or combined with gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, wildlife safaris, birding and cultural experiences to create a complete Ugandan adventure.

Whether you are searching for Rwenzori hiking tours, Mount Elgon trekking, Sipi Falls hikes, Bwindi forest walks, mountain hiking in Uganda or a private Uganda trekking safari, we can design a journey that takes you deeper into the landscapes, communities and wilderness that make Uganda extraordinary.

Choose your pace

_______

Hiking does not have to mean one kind of adventure.

Uganda hiking safaris do not have to follow one fixed style of adventure. Whether you want a gentle nature walk, a scenic waterfall hike, a challenging mountain trek or a multi-day expedition, your experience can be tailored to your pace, interests and fitness level.

Explore Uganda's landscapes on foot through forest hiking, mountain trekking, waterfall walks and guided nature trails. Take your time beneath the ancient forests of Bwindi, discover the dramatic slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains, hike through the highlands of Mount Elgon or follow the scenic trails surrounding Sipi Falls.

For travelers seeking a more immersive Uganda trekking experience, active days can be balanced with private guiding, comfortable accommodation and thoughtfully planned safari experiences. Your itinerary can be as adventurous or as relaxed as you want it to be.

From leisurely nature walks to challenging mountain hikes, choose the pace that makes your Uganda hiking safari yours.

Forest Hiking

Walk beneath ancient forest canopies while exploring biodiversity, birds, primates and distinctive flora with an experienced local guide.

Mountain Trekking

For experienced hikers, Uganda's mountain ranges offer longer routes, elevation gain, changing ecosystems and a deeper sense of wilderness.

Volcano Hiking

Waterfall Hikes

Combine scenic walking with dramatic cascades, viewpoints and village landscapes, particularly around the Sipi Falls region.

Nature Walks

Shorter walks provide an ideal addition to wildlife safaris, cultural journeys, gorilla trekking and relaxed luxury itineraries.

Walking Safaris

Experience Uganda at ground level and learn to read landscapes, tracks, vegetation and wildlife signs with an experienced guide.

For serious mountain travellers

_______

The Rwenzori experience.

The Rwenzori Mountains offer one of the most extraordinary hiking experiences in Uganda, combining dramatic landscapes, alpine environments and rare high-altitude vegetation. Known as the Mountains of the Moon, the Rwenzori range provides exceptional Rwenzori hiking and trekking opportunities for adventurous travellers seeking something beyond a traditional safari. As you ascend through different ecological zones, the scenery transforms from lush montane forest and bamboo to giant lobelias, heather-covered slopes and rugged mountain terrain. Planning your adventure

_______

How to plan the right Uganda hiking safari

Choose your hiking difficulty

Uganda hiking tours range from relatively short, accessible walks to demanding multi-day mountain expeditions.

Before selecting a route, consider your normal activity level, previous trekking experience, altitude tolerance and the number of consecutive walking days you enjoy.

A well-designed luxury hiking safari does not need to maximise physical difficulty. The goal is to create a rewarding experience that feels challenging without becoming unnecessarily exhausting.

Choose the right season

Uganda can be travelled throughout much of the year, but weather conditions can influence trail conditions, visibility and walking comfort.

Flexible travellers can often benefit from choosing dates around the type of hiking they want rather than simply selecting a generic safari season.

Your safari designer should consider rainfall, elevation, road conditions and the specific geography of your selected hiking region when building the route.

Combine hiking with wildlife

One of the greatest advantages of Uganda is the ability to combine active travel with classic safari experiences.

A hiking itinerary can be extended with game drives, boat excursions, chimpanzee trekking, gorilla trekking, birding or cultural experiences.

Travel at your own pace

Private travel gives you greater control over the rhythm of your journey.

Some travellers want early starts and long walking days. Others prefer shorter hikes followed by long lunches, scenic viewpoints and time at their lodge.

The itinerary should reflect the traveller, not the other way around.

Highly recommended We had a wonderful experience with Jonathan. He welcomed us at the airport and took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the end of our trip. The selection of hotels was impeccable, and the route he designed was perfectly planned. Jonathan is extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and went the extra mile to make sure we saw lions and all of the Big Five during our visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. He was always attentive, patient, and eager to make our experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended!

Exceptional experience, enriching and truly unforgettable. From the moment we landed we received a warm welcome. Jonathan was friendly and readily available to answer any queries throughout our trip. He was incredibly accommodating with our requests to visit schools, residences ensuring that we achieved everything we wanted from the trip. We had a great time with Jonathan and driver Isaac. Jonathan was very funny and very knowledgeable he became part of the family and the time just flew whilst we were there, we felt safe at all times. The food at each venue catered for all our needs. Definitely leant a lot on this trip. Just need to be aware that food ordered in restaurants do take a long time as they make it from scratch so if pushed for time might be advisable to pre order. We had unforgettable holiday and this company went above and beyond to make every moment special. I would recommend them to anyone.

.gorilla trek Our KQ flight was horribly delayed. From 2.30 pm to arriving @ almost 3 am the following day. Jonathan kindly arranged for airport pick at this early hour of day and even rescheduled our departure for bwindi so we could get some rest. That was very accommodating.the drive to bwindi was a long drive -11 hrs- n he informed hotel of our late arrival. The lodge he chose for us was good and comfortable. However the vehicle for transporti g us could be better as it was quite hot without air conditioning. Gorilla trek was good but tough. Overall Ababa safaris were very accommodating. I wouldrecommend them. The hotel in Kampala- Speke hotel leaves a lot to be desired

Such a wonderful experience!! My family and I contacted Jonathan to help us plan our first Murchison Falls safari. Jonathan arranged our transport from Kampala, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary and guided game drives through Murchison falls. Ronnie, our professional driver and guide, was very knowledgeable and paid close attention to details to make us comfortable. He met with us a day before takeoff to answer any outstanding questions and recommended a time for us to set off to avoid any traffic. His experience made our trip even more enjoyable because we knew what to expect for entry fees into the park, where to stop to use clean washrooms, eat good food, and also what side of the boat cruise to sit on for the best views! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, job, rhinos, buffaloes and many other animals. We would definitely go with them for our next safari in Uganda! They had great communication, value for money, professionalism, knowledge of the industry and were very reliable.

A must-hire company! Punctual, professional, great communication. We used Ababa Safaris for a trip from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park. I would HIGHLY recommend! Our driver picked us up in a large safari vehicle with a pop up roof. The driver was very punctual and had excellent communication while preparing for the trip and during the trip. Ronnie took us to a nice restaurant for a rest stop that had clean bathrooms and good food. He was friendly with many people we met along the way at the Rhino Sanctuary, on the safari trails, and at our chosen lodging. It felt as though he had good connections with people, which we took as a good sign. Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the best places to see the animals and gave us a great safari experience. As the person in the family who does much of the planning, it was a very enjoyable experience to hand all of that over to Ababa and really get to enjoy myself.

Animals and beautiful nature in Uganda and Rwanda From being picked-up from Entebbe airport in the middle of the night until the drop-off eleven days later in Kigali it was a perfect tour. Jonathan, our guide, and the driver Moses was a perfect team - very friendly, knowledgable and always in time. We visited Entebbe for a tour through the botanical gardens and the zoo, did safaris and boat trips in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP and did trekkings to the chimpazees in Kibale and to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The primates are a must visit when you travel to this region. It's expensive but worth every dollar. The safari parks are of course not as rich in animals as for example the Masai Mara. But they are much cheaper, there are much lesser tourists and nevertheless it doesn't become boring regarding animal sightings. We saw a lot of different antelopes, beautiful giraffes, lions, many elephants, buffalos, a lot of hippos and crocodiles and much more. The choice of hotels was very good, simple and cheap where there was only a short overnight stay and a bit more expensive where it was worth to spend the money for staying close to the places of interest, e.g. close to the starting point for primate trekkings or in the middle of QENP and Murchison NP for not loosing game-drive-time.
