Volcanoes National Park Where Rwanda rises into the wild.
Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s iconic gorilla trekking destination, located in the country’s northwest within the spectacular Virunga Massif. The park protects dramatic volcanic slopes covered by bamboo forest, evergreen forest, open grassland, swamp and high-altitude vegetation.
For travellers seeking an exceptional Rwanda gorilla safari, the experience extends far beyond a single wildlife encounter. The landscape creates an unforgettable setting, with towering volcanoes rising above the countryside, mist gathering around their summits and dense forests creating a remarkable sense of wilderness within easy reach of Kigali.
Volcanoes National Park takes its name from the chain of dormant volcanoes forming the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. At approximately 4,507 metres, Mount Karisimbi is the highest of Rwanda’s five principal Virunga volcanoes.
The park is world-renowned for mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda, where visitors enter the forest with experienced guides to track habituated gorilla families through challenging but rewarding terrain. The encounter combines wildlife, conservation, adventure and close observation of one of Africa’s most remarkable great apes.
Beyond gorilla trekking, a Volcanoes National Park safari can include golden monkey trekking, volcano hiking, cultural experiences, village visits and time in Musanze. This allows travellers to create a private Rwanda safari itinerary tailored to their interests rather than treating gorilla trekking as an isolated experience.
Discover one of Africa's most extraordinary mountain landscapes, where ancient volcanic peaks rise above mist-covered forests and endangered mountain gorillas move through the bamboo and rainforest. Experience private gorilla trekking, golden monkey encounters, volcano hikes and beautifully designed Rwanda safari journeys.

Before you trek
_______
What to expect from a Rwanda gorilla trek
A successful trek is about preparation as much as anticipation. Understanding the terrain, weather, fitness requirements and park regulations allows you to arrive prepared for the experience.
Gorilla trekking age
The Rwanda Development Board currently lists 15 years as the minimum age for gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park. Verify current regulations when booking because conservation and visitor policies change
What to wear
Pack lightweight layers, waterproof outerwear, sturdy hiking shoes, long trousers and gardening-style gloves or protective handwear. Gaiters are particularly useful when trails are muddy or vegetation is wet.
Gorilla permit cost
RDB's current booking information lists the standard foreign visitor gorilla tracking permit at US$1,500. It also lists separate promotional categories for eligible visitors, with conditions and seasonal restrictions. Confirm the applicable rate for your travel dates before making payment.
Fitness and terrain
Gorilla trekking takes place in mountainous forest terrain. Trek duration and difficulty vary according to the location of the assigned gorilla family, weather and terrain. Regular walking or hiking preparation is useful, particularly for travellers unfamiliar with steep or muddy trails.

Beyond gorillas
_______
Golden monkey trekking in Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park offers more than mountain gorilla trekking. The forest is also known for the endangered golden monkey, a striking primate associated with the bamboo forests of the Virunga region.
Golden monkey trekking creates a different rhythm from gorilla tracking. These lively primates can move rapidly through bamboo and forest vegetation, creating a dynamic wildlife experience for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
For travellers building a longer Rwanda itinerary, combining golden monkey tracking with gorilla trekking creates a broader primate-focused safari while allowing additional time to explore the landscape around Musanze.
- Dedicated primate-tracking experience
- Excellent addition to a gorilla safari
- Opportunity for wildlife photography
- Explore the bamboo and montane forest ecosystem
The Virunga Mountains
_______
Five volcanoes. One extraordinary landscape.
The volcanic skyline is central to the identity of Volcanoes National Park. Each mountain has a distinctive character, from crater lakes and bamboo-covered slopes to demanding high-altitude ascents.
Why the landscape matters
_______
More than a gorilla destination
Volcanoes National Park is a complete mountain destination. The gorillas may be its most famous residents, but the volcanic environment creates a much wider safari story.
Montane ecosystems
Explore a rich mosaic of bamboo forest, evergreen forest, open grassland, swamps and high-altitude vegetation. These varied mountain habitats support diverse wildlife and birdlife, adding depth to every Volcanoes National Park safari.
Albertine Rift biodiversity
Discover a remarkable landscape within the Albertine Rift, a region recognised for its biodiversity and endemic species. The Virunga Mountains create distinct habitats across changing elevations, making the area valuable for wildlife, nature and conservation experiences.
Birdwatching
Add birdwatching to your Volcanoes National Park itinerary, with approximately 200 bird species reported in the park area. Guided birding experiences complement gorilla trekking, golden monkey encounters, volcano hiking and wildlife photography for nature-loving travellers.
Conservation tourism
Experience conservation-focused tourism in Rwanda’s renowned mountain gorilla habitat. Gorilla trekking supports wider conservation efforts, while the Rwanda Development Board oversees official gorilla permits and visitor arrangements, helping travellers plan their experience.
Gateway to the Virungas
_______
Musanze: your base for Volcanoes National Park
Musanze is the natural gateway for exploring Volcanoes National Park and the surrounding Virunga landscape. Its location makes it practical for early-morning gorilla trekking departures, golden monkey experiences and volcano hiking.
A premium itinerary can turn Musanze into more than an overnight stop. Carefully selected lodges and hotels provide a comfortable base from which to experience the mountains, with private transfers and flexible scheduling allowing the journey to feel relaxed rather than rushed.
The region also provides opportunities to explore local culture, village life, caves and landscapes beyond the principal gorilla experience. Visit Rwanda highlights Buhanga Eco-Park and the Musanze Caves among attractions in the wider area.

- Boutique and luxury accommodation options

Planning your safari
_______
Best time to visit Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park can be visited throughout the year. Your preferred travel period should depend on the type of experience you want, your tolerance for wet conditions and the wider Rwanda itinerary you intend to build.
June to September
This period is commonly considered attractive for trekking and broader Rwanda safari planning because conditions are often relatively drier. It is also an important period to plan well in advance because demand for popular experiences can be strong.
October to November
The transition into wetter conditions can produce greener landscapes and atmospheric mountain scenery. Rain can make trails muddy, so waterproof clothing and suitable footwear are particularly important.
December to February
These months can work well for travellers combining Rwanda with other destinations. Mountain weather remains changeable, so preparation for rain is still essential.
March to May
The wetter season can bring lush vegetation and dramatic conditions in the mountains. Travellers who enjoy photography, green landscapes and quieter travel periods may find this season appealing, subject to their tolerance for rain.

Travel with purpose
_______
A safari that respects the forest
Gorilla trekking exists within a carefully managed conservation framework. Visitors should follow all instructions from park authorities and guides, respect wildlife space and avoid travelling when experiencing contagious illness.
Rwanda Development Board's current gorilla-tracking guidance asks visitors to maintain a distance of seven metres from gorillas and states that visitors may be denied access if they are sick with a cold, flu or other contagious illness.
Responsible tourism is not simply a rulebook. It is part of what makes the experience meaningful. A mountain gorilla encounter should leave the forest as undisturbed as possible while giving travellers a deeper understanding of the ecosystem they have entered.
